Area Prep Softball Report for Saturday, April 1

Make it four straight wins for The Willow School.

The Lions defeated H.L. Bourgeois 7-2 at home Friday.

Senior Mary Elizabeth Landry was simply outstanding on the mound, pitching a complete game. Of the 21 outs recorded by Landry, 15 were strikeouts as she dominated the Braves.

The Willow School (11-4) returns to action today in the St. James Tournament against Morgan City.

Make it 10 straight wins for Pope John Paul II.

The Jaguars outscored Mandeville 10-8 at Mandeville.

In a wild contest, the Jaguars scored three runs in the top of the first before Mandeville scored twice in the bottom of the second inning. Each team scored once in the third and it was 4-3. Pope John Paul II scored twice in the fourth and added four in the seventh inning to take a commanding 10-3 lead. The Skippers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh but came up short.

Freshman Kady Benedic led the Jaguars with three hits and three RBI while junior Kayla Benedic had two hits and two RBI. Ella Babin added two hits and two RBI, Hannah Potter had two hits and an RBI while Kam Rodriguez and Payton Callahan each had a hit and an RBI to pace a 15-hit attack.

Babin picked up the win in relief of Ashley Chighizola. Babin went four innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits after Chighizola pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Grace Richard had two hits and two RBI, Mia Graefenstein had three hits and Kara Henry, Reina Keys and Blair Ezell and Lindsay Berniard each drove in a run for the Skippers. Hailey Marange went the distance to take the loss, allowing seven earned runs.

Pope John Paul II (17-3) will play at Archbishop Hannan Monday at 5 p.m.

The Skippers (8-13) return to District 6-5A play Tuesday at Hammond at 3:30 p.m.

Ponchatoula extended its win streak to four, edging Lakeshore 8-7 in a thriller at Lakeshore.

Christina Curtis decided the issue with a home run in the top of the seventh inning to provide the margin of victory.

The Green Wave (17-9) will travel to Denham Springs Monday at 4:30 p.m.

The Titans (8-11) will return to District 8-4A action, hosting Franklinton Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
