Baseball: St. Paul’s blanks John Curtis in battle of Division I powers

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, March 2

In a battle of top programs and recent Division I state champions Monday, St. Paul’s shut out John Curtis Christian 2-0 in Covington.

The Wolves broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and that would stand up for the win.

The pitching was superb.

Senior Hunter Corass pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits for the win. Corass walked three and struck out four. Sophomore Kade Anderson picked up the save, going two shutout innings, walking two while striking out six.

Michael Curtis went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits to take the loss. Michael O’Brien, Josh Lopez and Cameron Romano combined to pitch two shutout innings in relief.

Senior Matthew Russo and junior Trent Caime each had a hit and an RBI for the Wolves in the fourth inning to provide the margin of victory. Senior Cade Lanoux and sophomore Steven Spalitta each added a pair of hits for St. Paul’s to pace a 7-hit attack.

Curtis and freshman Brad Chaisson, who doubled, had the only hits for the Patriots.

The loss snapped a 4-game win streak for John Curtis (4-2).

St. Paul’s and John Curtis have combined to win the last three Division I state championships.

St. Paul’s won the last Division I state title on the field in 2019 and lost to John Curtis in the 2018 Division I title game. John Curtis also won the Division I championship in 2017.

The Wolves (4-1) will entertain Destrehan Thursday at 4 p.m. while the Patriots head to north Louisiana for tournament play and will face Byrd Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
