Baseball: St. Martin’s wins fifth straight; Patrick Taylor, Hammond, Riverside victorious

Area Prep Baseball Report for Saturday, March 25

St. Martin’s Episcopal is playing excellent baseball.

The Saints won their fifth straight game, downing Albany 5-1 at Mike Miley Stadium Friday night.

St. Martin’s took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third and broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Hornets got their only run in the seventh inning.

M. Dufrene, D. Helwig and C. Wakefield each contributed a hit and an RBI for the Saints. Dufrene was the story, pitching a complete game five-hitter. He walked just three and struck out five.

St. Martin’s (11-4) returns to action today at 1 p.m. against Holden at 1 p.m.

Albany (6-12) will host Kentwood today at noon.

Patrick Taylor downed East St. John 7-2.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings before the Wildcats cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the top of the third. Patrick Taylor lengthened its advantage to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the third. The Tigers broke it open with four runs in the fourth inning to make it 7-1 and East St. John scored its final run in the fifth inning.

Gavin Gibson led the Patrick Taylor offense with two hits and two RBI while Kinkaid Hinyup had a single, double and an RBI. Hayden Chastant and Leonard Theophile each had a hit and an RBI, Anson Mo-Billiot drove in a run and Preston Champagne added two hits.

Champagne was excellent on the mound, going the distance to pick up the win. Champagne allowed just two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out four.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Wildcats.

Patrick Taylor (9-10) will meet East St. John (5-11) again today at 3 p.m. in Reserve.

Hammond continued its fine season, holding off West Feliciana 6-4 at home.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Tornadoes answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and made it 5-1 with a run in the second inning. Each team scored a run in the fourth to make it 6-2 and West Feliciana scored twice in the seventh but fell short.

Payne Petrolia had two hits and two RBI while Ian Trahan had a hit and two RBI for the Tornadoes. Konnor Graham added a hit and an RBI. Graham pitched four and two-third innings, allowing two runs on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts while Jace Caves pitched two and a third innings, allowing two unearned runs.

The Tornadoes (15-3) have won three straight and will host Fontainebleau Monday at 6:30 p.m. in its District 6-5A opener.

West Feliciana (12-8) will play at Springfield today at 1 p.m.

Riverside Academy defeated Higgins 6-1 at Reserve.

Freshman Jace Ruiz pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out 10 for the victory. Ryan Poche and Cameron Matt each contributed two hits.

Riverside (11-7-1) is back in action today at 11 a.m. at Ellender.

The Hurricanes (6-12) will host Booker T. Washington Monday at 4 p.m.
