Baseball: St. Martin’s, Central Lafourche, Ben Franklin with convincing wins

St. Martin’s Episcopal ran its win streak to four with a convincing 11-0 victory over Patrick Taylor Wednesday afternoon at Mike Miley Stadium in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.
David Helwig pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, a single by Jeremy Gibson in the third inning. Helwig struck out two.
St. Martin’s jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Matthew Weaver to make it 1-0.
The Saints got the job done with a huge third inning, scoring seven runs in that frame as Gavin Dimaggio, Matthew Dufrene, Daniel Duplantis, Alex Scheuermann and Helwig each drove in runs. The Saints tacked on three runs in the fourth inning.
Helwig and Duplantis each drove in a pair of runs.
The Saints stole nine bases and played error-free defense.
Hayden Chastant took the loss for the Tigers, going three innings, allowing eight runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
St. Martin’s (10-4) returns to action Friday against Albany at 7 p.m.
Patrick Taylor (8-10) returns to action Friday at home against East St. John at 5 p.m.
Central Lafourche handled St. Augustine 10-0 at home in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.
The Trojans took a one-run lead after one inning and broke it open with seven runs in the second inning. Central Lafourche scored a run in the third to make it 9-0 and ended the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jace Morvant had two hits, including a homer and four RBI while Jacob Davis had two hits and two RBI. Keegan Pertuit added two hits.
Mason Canter starred on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings to pick up the win. Canter walked two and struck out seven. Justin Pierce finished with a scoreless sixth inning.
Gary Ray took the loss for the Purple Knights. Skyler Green and Kenyon Hughes each had a hit for St. Augustine.
Central Lafourche (12-8) plays at Thibodaux Thursday at 6 p.m.
St. Augustine (6-15) returns to District 9-5A play today against Archbishop Rummel at 4 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium.
Ben Franklin continued its upward trend with a 13-2 victory over Carver at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
The Falcons (6-8) scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, keeping pace with Warren Easton and Douglass in the District 11-4A race.
Jacob Russell and John Lloyd each had three hits and three RBI while Larry Smith had two hits and three RBI to lead the Falcons.
The two teams meet again Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Larry Gilbert Stadium.
