Baseball: St. Charles Catholic, Patrick Taylor, St. Martin’s win Monday

Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, April 6

St. Charles Catholic defeated Archbishop Shaw 6-4 at home Monday.

The Comets scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles tied it with a run in the top of the fifth before the Comets scored four in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1.

Shaw made it 5-2 with a run in the top of the sixth before St. Charles Catholic scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2. The Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh but it was not enough.

Ryan Laiche picked up the win in relief of Bryce Bertucci.

Laiche went the final 2 2/3 innings after Bertucci went 4 1/3 innings.

Cade Pregeant was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Anthony Fernandez was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Josh Tamplain had a triple and an RBI to pace the Comets attack.

“We are just happy we found a way to win,” St. Charles Catholic coach Wayne Stein said. “We have played a tough schedule and hope it is going to pay off down the road. As a result, we do not have the kind of record we are used to having but we will be better for it.”

St. Charles Catholic (11-9-1) will travel to University High Wednesday at 6 p.m. while Archbishop Shaw (10-12) plays at Archbishop Hannan Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Patrick Taylor blanked Kenner Discovery 14-0 in District 11-3A action at home in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and erupted for 11 runs in the second inning.

Gavin Tranchina had two doubles and three RBI while Kyle Smith also drove in three runs for Patrick Taylor. Grant Roberts had two hits and two RBI. Anson Mo-Billiot added a hit and an RBI.

Mason Raymond went the distance, allowing just three hits for Patrick Taylor. Raymond walked one and struck out four.

Julian Caronna took the loss for the Swamp Owls. Caronna had two of the three hits for the Tigers.

Patrick Taylor (10-7, 1-1) and Kenner Discovery (8-8, 1-4) will play the second game of the series Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Kenner.

St. Martin’s Episcopal won at Bonnabel 16-3 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

The Saints put it away early, scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning.

The Bruins scored twice in the bottom of the second to make it 8-2 but St. Martin’s responded with three runs in the top of the third. St. Martin’s posted five more runs in the top of the fifth and Bonnabel scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Gavin Sperandeo had a hit and two RBI, Colin Saucier had two hits and an RBI while Matthew Dufrene, Matthew Weaver andNoah Chin each had a hit and an RBI for the Saints.

Shawn Shank went three innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Shank walked one and struck out six. Stefen Brower pitched the final two innings for St. Martin’s.

The Saints (8-14) will host rival Country Day Wednesday at 4 p.m. in District 8-1A play while the Bruins (2-10) will travel to Higgins Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a District 8-5A contest.
