Baseball Report: St. Paul’s, Northshore, Slidell, Hammond post district wins

Area Prep Baseball Report for Friday, March 29

There is now a three-way tie for first in District 6-5A following action Thursday night between St. Paul’s, Northshore and Ponchatoula.

St. Paul’s traveled to Covington and defeated the Lions 12-5.

The Wolves scored a run in the top of the first and added four in the third to make it 5-0. St. Paul’s scored three more in the top of the fourth to make it 8-0 before Covington answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and it was 8-3.

St. Paul’s (16-4, 4-1) put the game away with four runs in the top of the fifth to make it 12-3 before the Lions ended the scoring with two in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior William Duncan was the star of the game with three hits, six RBI and three runs scored for the Wolves. Sophomore Connor Simon drove in two runs, sophomore Matthew Russo had two hits and an RBI and senior Kyle Conigliaro had a hit and an RBI for St. Paul’s.

Senior Jacob Boudreaux went four innings in relief of junior starter Sam Heap and Simon to pick up the victory. Boudreaux allowed three runs, just one earned, on three hits.

St. Paul’s will host Covington (10-9, 2-3) tonight at 6:30 to conclude the series.

Northshore used the big inning to break a tie game and won 7-2 at Mandeville Thursday evening.

The Panthers (11-9, 4-1) scored twice in the top of the first before the Skippers tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third. Northshore decided it with a big five-run fifth inning.

Junior Dillon Cousin had two hits and two RBI, junior Carson Lore had two hits and an RBI, senior Branyan Bounds had a hit and an RBI and junior Preston Ratliff drove in a run for the Panthers, who had 10 hits.

Senior Stephen Graham had two hits and an RBI while junior Gabe Stockton had a hit and an RBI for Mandeville (12-5, 2-3).

Ratliff picked up the win in relief, hurling four perfect shutout innings, striking out six. Junior starter Michael Cauble took the loss for Mandeville, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits. He walked five and fanned five batters.

The two teams conclude the series Saturday at 1:30 at Northshore.

Slidell won at Ponchatoula 7-5.

The Tigers (12-11, 1-4) scored twice in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead before the Green Wave put up a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1 and added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2. Slidell scored three in the top of the seventh and needed them as Ponchatoula answered with three in the bottom of the inning but it was not enough.

Junior Beau Adams had three hits and two RBI to pace the Tigers. Junior Bailey Lupo had two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Jayden Raines had two hits and an RBI while sophomore Matthew Pagano, senor Drew Haaga and junior Niko Dunne had a hit and an RBI.

Sophomore James Raynes picked up the win in relief, going five and a third innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Kole Sonnier drove in a pair of runs for the Green Wave (12-9, 4-1).

The two teams will conclude the series at Slidell tonight at 6:30 p.m.

In a wild contest at Hammond, the host Tors outlasted Fontainebleau 11-10 in a slugfest.

Fontainebleau took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first before Hammond answered with a pair of runs and led 2-1 after one inning.

The Bulldogs recaptured the lead with four runs in the top of the second to make it 5-2 but the Tornadoes put up six in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-5 lead.

Fontainebleau cut the deficit to 8-7 with two runs in the top of the fourth but Hammond lengthened the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-7.

Hammond scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to make it 11-7 but Fontainebleau rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh and came up just short.

Senior Kenny Bell had three hits and two RBI for the Tornadoes and senior Ashton Dupuy had two hits and two RBI. Junior Mason Greer had a pair of hits and an RBI and senior John Francis had a hit and an RBI. Senior Gage Lee also drove in a run as Hammond posted 11 hits.

Senior Griffin Tinnerello started and picked up the win, going three and a third innings. Junior Lionel Lusk also went three and a third innings before junior Marcello Rodriguez came in to get the final out and the save.

Hammond (6-13, 3-2) will complete the series at Fontainebleau (4-15, 0-5) tonight at 6:30 p.m.
