Baseball Report: St. Martin’s posts solid win at East Jeff
Kit Laird has his St. Martin’s Episcopal Saints playing a difficult non-district schedule this season. The strategy is paying off.
Despite taking some tough losses to quality teams including John Curtis Christian, St. Thomas Aquinas, De La Salle and Salmen, the Saints are getting some quality wins as well.
Friday was a good example as St. Martin’s scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to cap a stirring comeback in a 5-4 victory at East Jefferson.
The Warriors jumped on the Saints early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and another run in the second to lead 4-0. St. Martin’s would score five unanswered runs to win it.
The Saints scored three runs in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 4-3, tied it with a run in the sixth and won it in the seventh inning.
Junior Kolby McWilliams got the win for the Saints. Junior Ethan Everitt and Brandon Roth each drove in a pair of runs to pace a six-hit attack for the Saints (10-7).
Senior Alex Gonzales took the loss for the Warriors. Senior Josh Ruckhaber had two hits and an RBI while Gonzales drove in a run for East Jefferson (11-7). The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Warriors.
Winners of two straight games, St. Martin’s returns to action this morning at Ellender at 11 a.m. in Houma while East Jefferson returns to District 8-5A play Tuesday at Bonnabel at 6:30 p.m.
