Baseball Report: Shaw closes regular season with win over Belle Chasse
On a day where virtually no one had a chance to get a game in, Archbishop Shaw scheduled its game with Belle Chasse early enough at 10 a.m. and the Eagles defeated the Cardinals 9-1 on Senior Day for the Eagles at Winterscheidt Stadium.
Shaw scored two runs in the bottom of the first, three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning. The Cardinals scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Eli Musso.
Patrick Leonard was outstanding on the mound for Shaw, giving up no runs just two hits in three innings to the Cardinals. Jordan LaCava was a star at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two singles while Jace Weileman had two hits, including a double and two RBI. Zac Delger was hit by pitch three different times.
LaCava followed Leonard to the mound for two innings, allowing one run. Tyler Nichol pitched the sixth inning before Logan Mulheisen pitched the seventh inning.
“It was good to get the game in,” Shaw coach Kirk Bullinger said. “Patrick pitched his best game as a Shaw Eagles. We have swung the bats better of late. We had some really good at-bats against Belle Chasse. We were disciplined. If we do that, we will have a chance to win against most pitchers. Out pitching has been solid. Our defense has been our Achilles heel, along with some sketchy baserunning. We are capable of playing well and winning in the playoffs.”
With the win, Shaw (12-17) concluded its regular season. Belle Chasse (14-15) will conclude its regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. at South Lafourche.
Shaw is ranked 11th unofficially in the latest Division power rankings while Belle Chasse was 21st in Class 4A.
