It was a tough pill to swallow.

After a very good start to the season, Archbishop Rummel hit the skids of late, losing six of its last eight games to drop significantly in the Division I power rankings. One of the most recent defeats was a 4-3 loss to St. Augustine on Tuesday at RBI Field at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The Raiders celebrated Senior Day Thursday by ending the skid with a convincing 8-1 victory over St. Augustine at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Rummel started its offense quickly, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After the Purple Knights scored a run in the top of the second to make it 5-1, the Raiders scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to pull away.

Hayden Elwell pitched an outstanding game for Rummel (17-15, 4-8), hurling a two-hitter while striking out four. Jake Fury and Kade Rivera each drove in a pair of runs while UNO signee Evan Francioni and Chandler Fields each had two hits to pace a seven-hit attack. Dwayne McGill took the loss for the Purple Knights (16-16, 3-9). Kenya Huggins drove in the lone run for St. Aug and also pitched three innings.

Raiders coach Nick Monica was relieved to get a win.

“Injuries and youth have caught up with us,” Monica said. “It’s hard to find consistency. We’ve had games where we’ve shown up and looked like a very good team and we’ve had shaky moments where we needed to be better. I’m glad for the seniors that they were able to win on Senior night. I’m looking forward to next week to get back to practice and start from the beginning.”

Rummel closes its regular season Saturday at 11 a.m. against District 7-5A champion Central Lafourche. St. Augustine will host Southern Lab this evening at 6 p.m. at RBI Field/Wesley Barrow Stadium.

Based on power rankings, the Raiders may very well see the Purple Knights again in the regional round of the Division I playoffs as Rummel looks pretty certain to be the seventh seed while St. Augustine appears likely to finish as the 10th seed.
