Baseball Report: Northshore continues stellar campaign with win over Riverside
Northshore continues its quest for a high seed in the upcoming Class 5A state playoffs.
The Panthers went to Reserve and downed Riverside Academy, a reigning state champion, for their fifth straight win by a score of 9-5.
Northshore accounted for its margin of victory with four runs in the top of the first inning. After the Rebels cut the deficit to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the second, the Panthers broke it open with three runs in the top of the third to make it 7-1. Riverside got two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-3 but the Panthers got those two runs back with two in the top of the fifth and it was 9-5. Riverside got two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it closer but it was not nearly enough.
Dayne Delatte drove in four runs for Northshore (29-2). Cole Cavallo and Branyan Bounds each drove in a pair of runs. Mikey Stutes had three hits for the Panthers, who banged out 13 hits. Gavin Vicknair had four hits for Riverside (15-11-2) . He took the loss on the mound, going five innings.
Northshore will host crosstown rival Salmen this morning at 11 a.m. in its final regular season game. The Panthers look like they will anywhere from the sixth to eighth seed when the 5A playoff pairings are announced tomorrow. Riverside hosts Lutcher today at 11 a.m.
