Baseball Report: Holy Cross, Northshore, Riverdale post solid wins Thursday

At Tiger Park, Holy Cross handled Slidell 8-3 on the opening day of the Mike Robertson Memorial Tournament.

The Tigers (4-1-1) took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first and added another in the top of the third to lead 2-0. Holy Cross answered with four in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead, added a run in the fourth to make it 5-2 and scored two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-2. Each team scored a run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Wiltz was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and two RBI, Mikey Ricks was 2-for-2 with a single, double and an RBI and Chris Collet homered and drove in a pair of runs. Bryan Broussard added two hits and an RBI as the Tigers banged out 11 hits.

Mason Mendoza had a pair of hits and an RBI while Cade Williamson drove in a pair of runs for Slidell (2-9).

James Oates took the loss, going four innings, allowing five runs and struck out two.

Will Montalbano picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Both teams return to action in the tournament today. Holy Cross will host Covenant Christian of Texas at 4 p.m. while Slidell faces powerful John Curtis Christian at 6 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium.

At the Jay Patterson Shootout in Gonzales, Northshore ripped East Ascension 11-0.

After the first two innings were scoreless, the Panthers scored twice in the top of the third, scored five runs in the fourth to lead 7-0 and completed the scoring with four runs in the fifth.

Northshore banged out nine hits, led by Walter Harris and Christian Garcia, who had two each. Harris had an RBI while Cole Cavallo had three RBI for the Panthers (9-1).

Brett Sanchez went the distance, allowing just two hits and struck out five. Chad Kennedy took the loss for East Ascension (3-6). The Spartans were plagued by five errors.

Both teams resume play in the tournament today. The Panthers will take on Archbishop Shaw at 4 p.m. while the Spartans will face Brother Martin tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Riverdale blasted Lusher Charter 15-0.

Jack Flynn allowed just one hit in an outstanding shutout effort. Brendan Baudry had a pair of hits while Eric Chacon belted a three-run home run and drove in four runs for the Rebels (4-2).

Riverdale will next face East Jefferson Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at East Jefferson in the Pedal Valves Tournament. The Lions (3-4) will next face Ben Franklin next Tuesday at 3:30 at the Urban Youth Academy.
