Area Prep Baseball Report for Tuesday, April 16

And then there was one. What else would you expect in District 7-5A?

The championship on the baseball diamond comes down to one game and, as it often does, it comes down to a showdown of the two biggest rivals from the east and west banks of St. Charles Parish.

While Central Lafourche won the district a year ago, the traditional powers in St. Charles Parish will decide the title this year.

Resurgent Hahnville saw to that with a convincing 10-0 victory at Destrehan Monday afternoon in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Joey Saucier pitched a gem for the Tigers, allowing just four hits, striking out four and walking two for his fifth win of the season.

In the process, the Tigers handed Wildcats ace TJ Thomas his first loss of the year after seven wins against some very good teams.

After a scoreless first inning, Hahnville scored six runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Hayden Theriot, Maxwell Farrell and Dustin Ford and a two-run single by David Bernard. Hahnville would not look back. They added a run in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Bernard had two hits and three RBI while Farrell had a pair of doubles. Saucier helped himself with two hits, including an RBI double. Nathan Rhodes had two hits, including a double for Destrehan.

Hahnville coach David Baudry is smiling these days with the way his team has turned its season around.

“We played as well as we played in a long time,” Baudry said. “I think we finally secured a lineup that players have found their roles in. We’ve had the same lineup since district began. Joey Saucier was fabulous. He has pitched really well for us. We have played good defense pretty much all year. The amount of work the kids have put in to improve offensively has paid off.”

While power points and playoff positioning remains the most important element for both teams, bragging rights are very important as well.

“Winning district means a lot in St. Charles Parish, especially when Hahnville and Destrehan play for it,” Baudry said. “This class has not been part of a district title. Our last one was 2013. Central Lafourche won the district title last year. Otherwise, it has been Destrehan.”

Hahnville (13-16, 9-2) has now won four straight games and 11 of their last 14 games. Destrehan (20-9, 10-1) lost for the first time in district play and saw its eight-game win streak come to an end. Hahnville continues to rise in the Class 5A power ratings, now unofficially 23rd while Destrehan is tenth.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Hahnville. Should Destrehan win, the Wildcats are the outright district champion while a Tiger win would result in Hahnville sharing the title.
