Division I quarterfinal best-of-three playoff action got underway Wednesday night and several other quarterfinal series are set to begin today.

No. 10 St. Augustine held off a final inning rally by No. 2 Brother Martin, winning 8-7 at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in a game aired live at CrescentCitySports.com.

In Baton Rouge, No. 1 Catholic handled No. 8 Archbishop Shaw 11-1.

The final score was not indicative of how the game was played most of the way.

The Eagles (19-17) scored a run in the top of the first inning on an error before Catholic evened the score with a run in the bottom of the third on a home run by Ben Robichaux.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when the Bears erupted for 10 runs to end the game in abrupt, unexpected fashion.

Clayton Pourciau started the uprising with an RBI double.

Shaw starter Cole Guidry, who pitched very well, departed and the Bears (24-6) jumped all over Eagles relievers with Catholic scoring nine runs with two outs.

Matthew Reinholtz delivered a two-run double and it was 4-1.

The floodgates then opened as Jayce LaCava could not find the plate, walking in four runs to make it 8-1. Daniel Harden capped the rally with a base-clearing, walk-off double to end it.

Harris Waghalter got the win for the Bears, allowing just a run on two hits. Waghalter struck out seven.

The Bears go for the sweep today at 4 p.m. at Grizzly Field.

The Eagles hope to extend the series to a third game on Friday.

The winner of the series advances to play the winner of No. 5 seed and defending state champion Jesuit, who opens a three-game series at No. 4 Byrd Friday evening.

Tonight, No. 3 seed John Curtis Christian hosts No. 6 Archbishop Rummel in game one at 6:30 p.m. at Mike Miley Stadium.

In Division II, No. 10 De La Salle opens its quarterfinal series at No. 2 St. Louis Catholic at 6 p.m.

In Division III, No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas hosts No. 8 Lafayette Christian at 6 p.m. in game one.

District rivals in No. 7 Newman and No. 2 St. Charles Catholic hook up at 4:30 p.m. at LaPlace to open their best-of-three series.

In Division V, No. 1 Claiborne Christian advanced to the semifinals with an easy 11-1 win over No. 8 St. Joseph’s-Plaucheville in six innings. Claiborne Christian will face the winner of No. 5 Northside Christian and No. 4 Family Community in Hammond next week.

In non-select action, No. 3 Lutcher opens its best-of-three series at home against No. 6 Iowa at 5:30 p.m. in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

No. 6 Lakeshore opens its quarterfinal series at No. 3 Assumption at 4 p.m.
