After splitting a pair of regular season matchups, long-time rivals Jesuit and Holy Cross hooked up in game one of their best-of-three regional round series at John Ryan Stadium Friday night.

In a spirited battle, the eighth-seeded Blue Jays prevailed 2-1 to take a 1-0 edge in the series.

In an outstanding pitcher’s dual, Will Hellmers outdueled Lance Lauve.

Hellmers pitched a two-hitter for his eighth win of the season. He allowed a seventh inning run, walking three and striking out eight, using 99 pitches. Lauve went the distance in defeat, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked four and struck out four, using 94 pitches.

Jesuit took the lead in the bottom of the second inning as Joel Guerra was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI double by Luke Eccles to make it 1-0. The Blue Jays added what proved to be a big run in the bottom of the third as Hellmers and Zack Casebonne singled and Tripp Haddad was hit by a pitch. Brian Valigosky grounded into a double play, scoring a run to make it 2-0.

Hellmers carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning when Nico Saltaformaggio doubled and Adrian Aguilar singled him home. Aguilar reached third base on a groundout but Hellmers got Davis Stephens to fly out to end the game.

Eccles had a pair of hits for the Blue Jays.

Game two is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. with a third and deciding game to follow, if necessary, at 6 p.m.
