NEW ORLEANS – A pair of teams off to great starts hooked up Friday evening at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Unbeaten Parkview Baptist came in as the unofficial top-ranked team in the Division II power rankings while Archbishop Rummel came in as the unofficial top-ranked team in the Division I power rankings.

The Eagles (10-0) took control early in a 5-1 victory over the Raiders at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Peyton Callender helped his own cause with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the first to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Parkview Baptist expanded the lead in the top of the second with three runs, taking advantage of poor defense by the Raiders. Brett Suits was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sam Russell had an infield chop hit.

Collin Hartzog then popped up a bunt that catcher Jake Fury made a nice play on for the catch. His throw to second was in plenty of time for a double play but the ball was not handled cleanly, extending the inning. Terry Tolliver then hit a grounder to second but the throw was low to first, allowing two runs to score to make it 4-0.

Rummel (8-2) had a chance in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Graham Ridley came on and got Lane LeBlanc to fly out to left before Kade Rivera lined out hard to left to end the threat.

The Eagles finished it off in the top of the seventh on a single by Connor Joffrion, his third of the game. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before Tolliver bunted for a hit with Tolliver advancing to third. Beau Comardelle followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left, scoring Joffrion to make it 5-0.

The Raiders finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Evan Francioni doubled to right-center field and scored on an RBI single to left by Ron Franklin to make it 5-1. The Raiders had chances throughout, stranding at least one runner in every inning and a total of 13 in the game.

Callender pitched the first three innings, allowing just one hit, walking four and striking out two to get the win. Matt Villa took the loss, going six and a third innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Villa walked one, hit two batters and struck out six. Evan Francioni finished up for the Raiders on the mound.

Ben Blakeney and Comardelle each pitched a shutout frame for Parkview Baptist before Graham Ridley pitched the final two innings for the Eagles, allowing the only run of the game on four hits.

Sam Russell went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Eagles while Joffrion was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Francioni was 2-for-3 with a double for Rummel while Kyle Albaral was 2-for-3 with a double.

The two teams will play at doubleheader at Parkview Baptist tomorrow.
