Baseball: Northshore wins twice in WGNO Classic

Area Prep Baseball Report for Sunday, Feb. 26

It was a productive day for the Northshore baseball program Saturday.

After dropping games to Newman and Jesuit in the WGNO Classic, the Panthers picked up a pair of wins.

The Panthers edged St. Augustine 3-2 at Winterscheidt Stadium.

Northshore scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead before the Purple Knights scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie it. Northshore scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior Andrew Powell led the way with two hits and two RBI, the only two hits of the game for Northshore.

Junior Jordan Fugate picked up the win in relief, pitching an inning and a third without allowing a run.

Northshore then made the trek to Metairie to Mike Miley Stadium and handed Archbishop Rummel its first loss, 5-3.

Rummel scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead before Northshore scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.

The Panthers tied it with a run in the fifth to make it 2-2.

The Raiders recaptured the lead with a run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2.

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory.

Sophomore Ayden Strecker had a big 2-run double while junior Jordan Fugate and senior Andrew Powell each had a hit and an RBI. Junior Grant Simmons also drove in a run for the Panthers.

Simmons pitched five innings, allowing just two runs, one earned. He walked just one and struck out five. Junior Jackson Fayard picked up the win in relief and senior Jack Buell got a save.

Northshore (2-2) returns to action Tuesday, hosting Vandebilt Catholic at 6:30 p.m.
