Baseball: Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana split Friday doubleheader

HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fought back after a 3-1 loss against Southeastern Louisiana Friday in the opener to earn a split with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Nicholls (19-19, 10-10 SLC) and Southeastern (20-19, 11-6 SLC) will wrap up the series Saturday in Thibodaux. First pitch at Ben Meyer Diamond at Didier Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.

In Game 2, Trever Kilcrease threw 6.1 shutout innings while the Colonels outhit Southeastern 7-4. Dillon Belle and Christopher Sandberg each had two hits in the win.

Brady Bell was responsible for the first run, driving in Adam Tarver on a two-out single in the third. Adam Tarver led off the frame with a double and scored for the early 1-0 lead.

Kilcrease did not allow a hit until the fourth with two outs. Trey Harrington singled to right but Mason Turner threw him out trying for a double.

Nicholls then added two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth. Belle put the Colonels ahead 2-0 on a double and the third run scored via a Lion error. The final run was thanks to a leadoff triple in the eighth by Ethan Valdez, who scored on a Dane Simon sacrifice fly.

The Lions only run crossed the plate on a balk in the ninth before Beau Balado ended the game on a strikeout.

For the opener, SLU’s Corey Gaconi went the distance on the mound to lead the Lions to a 3-1 win.

Shane Mejia Jr. suffered the loss with two earned runs in 4.0 innings. Matthew Harrison and Tyler Theriot combined for four innings of hitless relief.

Austin France had two of the Colonels’ four hits in the loss. The lone run for the Colonels scored in the fifth after Nathan Pilutti dropped a fly ball in right field.

SLU scored its first run on a solo home run by Harrington in the fourth. The Lions added two in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk and a throwing error.

Gaconi struck out 11 in his four-hit outing.
