Area Prep Baseball Report for Saturday, Feb. 29

John Curtis Christian won back-to-back Division I state championships in 2017 and 2018.

With a young team in 2019, the Patriots experienced some growing pains but were competitive. The Patriots are better and ready to challenge the top teams in 2020.

Curtis posted its second straight impressive victory, routing always tough Destrehan 10-1 at Destrehan Friday.

The Patriots scored two runs in the top of the second inning before breaking the game open with six runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead. John Curtis made it 10-0 with two in the top of the fourth but Destrehan was able to extend the game to its full length with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

Richard Woodruff belted a 2-run home run while Michael Curtis had three hits to pace the Patriots offense. Austin Ackel had a hit and drove in a pair of runs and Logan O’Neill added a pair of hits as part of a 12-hit attack. Shane Goins scored three runs for Curtis.

Austin McCready went four innings to pick up the victory, allowing only an unearned run on two hits. McCready walked no one and struck out seven. Tyler Carreras went one and two-thirds innings, not allowing a run, while pitched an inning and one-third of scoreless baseball.

In two games, John Curtis (2-0) has outscored opponents 23-1, having drilled De La Salle 13-0 on Thursday.

Curtis will get a great measuring stick on Monday when the Patriots travel to Heap Field to take on defending Division I state champion St. Paul’s at 6 p.m.

Country Day opened its season with a 4-0 shutout victory at home over Ben Franklin at Pontiff Playground.

John Overby was the story, pitching a complete game one-hitter, striking out eight, issuing just two walks while using just 83 pitches.

The Cajuns scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Peter Cannella paced the Cajun offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBI while John Overby added a hit and an RBI.
