Baseball: Jesuit, John Curtis, Country Day, Destrehan continue winning ways

Area Prep Baseball Report for Wednesday, March 31

In a battle of teams ranked No. 1 in their respective classes Tuesday night, Jesuit shut out Newman 4-0 at John Ryan Stadium.

The Blue Jays got it done with timely hitting, solid defense and a brilliantly pitching performance.

Junior Ryan Porche was the story for Jesuit, pitching a complete game, allowing just four hits. Porche walked just one, hit a batter and struck out nine in an outstanding performance as he improved to 5-0 on the season.

Scoreless entering the third inning, Jesuit put up three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Tripp Haddad laced a two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning to give Jesuit a 2-0 lead before Holden Hess singled home Haddad to make it 3-0. Haddad has now driven in 32 runs in just 22 games to lead Jesuit in that category.

Preston Berrgren added an insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Pike Philibert took the loss for the Greenies, No. 1 in the state in the Division III power rankings going five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Philibert walked three and struck out seven.

Jesuit (21-1) returns to Catholic League play Thursday, hosting Archbishop Shaw at 6 p.m. while Newman (18-4) will travel to Ascension Episcopal at 6 p.m. Monday.

While Jesuit is No. 1 in the state in the Division I power rankings, John Curtis Christian is currently No. 1 in District 9-5A.

The Patriots remained unbeaten in league play, winning their fifth straight game with a solid 13-6 win over St. Augustine at Wesley Barrow Stadium to sweep the two-game series with the Purple Knights.

John Curtis jumped all over the Purple Knights, taking a commanding 8-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning, three runs in the fourth and four in the top of the fifth.

St. Augustine got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-2 but the Patriots responded with five runs in the top of the sixth to make it 13-2.

The Purple Knights extended the game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth but fell well short.

The Patriots had 12 hits. Logan O’Neill was 3-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base and an RBI while Michael O’Brien was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and four RBI. Richard Woodruff was 2-for-2 with a double, a stolen base and two RBI, Brad Chaisson had a hit and an RBI and Nyan Hayes had two hits, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Austin Ackel picked up the win, going four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Ackel walked three and struck out four. Woodruff pitched an inning before Josh Lopez finished up for John Curtis on the mound.

Jeffrey Duroncelay took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits. Duroncelay walked one and struck out six. Jardy Montgomery finished up on the bump for the Purple Knights.

Louisiana Tech signee Kenya Huggins was 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI to pace a nine-hit attack for St. Augustine. Leon Franklin Jr. and Genesis Prosper each had two hits while Montgomery had a hit and an RBI.

John Curtis (12-3, 4-0) will face a showdown with Archbishop Rummel in the first of a two-game series on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Segnette Field in Westwego. St. Augustine (12-7, 0-2) returns to league play next Tuesday at 4 p.m. at John Ryan Stadium against Jesuit.

Country Day stayed red hot, winning its eighth straight game with a 10-0 victory in six innings over Ecole Classique in a District 9-1A contest at Pontiff Playground in a game shortened due to the mercy rule.

Daniel Conwell went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI, Dylan Simmons was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jack Schwing was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Cajuns.

Michael Talbot pitched a shutout to pick up the victory.

Country Day (13-1, 1-0) will host South Plaquemines in a non-district game Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Pontiff Playground while the Spartans (5-8, 0-1) fell for the sixth straight time and will host Riverside Academy next Tuesday at 4 p.m. in district play.

Destrehan stayed hot, winning its fifth straight game with a 7-0 win at H.L. Bourgeois in District 7-5A action.

Seth Kenney pitched six shutout innings, striking out seven to pick up the win. Kenney and Noah Simon paced the offense with two hits each.

The Wildcats (13-8, 3-1) return to district action Thursday at Thibodaux at 6 p.m. while the Braves (5-12, 0-3) lost their sixth straight game and will travel to Central Lafourche Thursday at 6 p.m. in a 6-5A contest.
