Area Prep Baseball Report for Friday, Feb. 25

On the opening night of the annual WGNO Classic, Hahnville was impressive in a 4-2 win over Brother Martin at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The Crusaders scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by B. Gauthier.

Hahnville (1-1) tied it in the top of the third on an RBI single by Collin Zeringue.

The Tigers scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead on an RBI double by Zeringue and an RBI single by Mason Long.

Brother Martin pulled within 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Johnson.

Hahnville added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brian Thomas.

Seth Whitney added two hits to a 9-hit attack for Hahnville. Landon Cortez picked up the win, going five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Cortez walked four and struck out six. Whitney came on in relief and was brilliant, pitching two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.

“I thought two things were huge,” Hahnville coach David Baudry said. “Landon limited their opportunities by continually throwing strikes and we were aggressive and had really tough, good at-bats when we needed them. Whitney came in and he is a left-hander who throws strikes and gave them a different look. We wanted to get him out there once we got the lead and he did a great job.”

Tyler Velino pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, walking one and striking out four to take the loss for Brother Martin. Alex Laiche pitched the final inning for the Crusaders (0-1).

Hahnville plays at Holy Cross at 6:30 p.m. Friday while Brother Martin will take on Fontainebleau at 6:30 p.m. at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

After losing a tough extra inning game to open the season Monday at Destrehan, Archbishop Rummel was itching to get back on the diamond.

The Raiders did so in Mobile, Alabama, at the Southeast Catholic Classic. The Raiders opened the tournament in solid fashion Thursday, defeating John Carroll Catholic of Birmingham 13-3.

Rummel scored twice in the top of the first before John Carroll tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. The Raiders scored twice in the top of the third to take the lead for good at 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, Rummel broke the game open with six runs to make it 10-2 and added three runs in the top of the seventh inning before the Cavaliers scored the final run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Raiders banged out 10 hits and each team committed three errors.

Tyler Cook paced the Rummel attack with three hits and an RBI while Louisiana Tech signee Kyle Walker was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Josh Sterling, Bradley Pelle and Shane Hirstius each added a hit and two RBI.

Michael Tant picked up the win for Rummel, going four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Tant walked just one and struck out four. Mikey Ryan pitched a shutout inning, as did Giancarlo Arencibia. Gene Roth pitched the final inning for the Raiders.

Mitchell Walker took the loss for the Cavaliers (1-2), allowing eight runs in 4 1/3 innings. Samuel Murray had a hit and an RBI as John Carroll produced just three hits in the game.

Rummel (1-1) returns to action in the tournament against Montgomery Catholic (Alabama) at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Hank Aaron Stadium, the former minor-league ballpark in Mobile.

At Pontiff Playground, Country Day had an easy time in an 11-0 victory over Lusher Charter in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings by the mercy rule.

The story was the pitching of the Cajuns, with two hurlers combining on a no-hitter as Jake Ibieta went four innings and Owen Marchal went one inning.

Dawson Simmons went 4-for-4 with a pair of singles, a double and a triple and drove in five runs to pace the offense for Country Day. Sinnot Bland was 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and two RBI and John Overby was 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI.
