Baseball: Brother Martin hammers Holy Cross, St. Charles Catholic wins ninth straight

Area Prep Baseball Report for Saturday, April 24

There will be no sole champion in District 9-5A.

Red hot Brother Martin saw to that Friday night, blasting Holy Cross 20-8 at Tiger Park.

The Crusaders scored in six of seven innings, scoring in their final six innings, including crooked numbers in the final five innings.

The loss leaves Holy Cross in a tie for the District 9-5A title with John Curtis Christian, though the Tigers swept the Patriots in two games.

Holy Cross scored a run in the bottom of the first before Brother Martin got even with a run in the top of the second.

Brother Martin took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the third before the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and it was tied 4-4.

The Crusaders then broke it open, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth to make it 13-4. The Tigers tried to make a game of it with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and it was 13-8.

Brother Martin finished it off with three runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh.

Cameron Senior was terrific for the Crusaders with three hits, including a pair of home runs and seven RBI. Ben Harris had four hits for the Crusaders, Eli Booth had three hits and Bryce Gauthier had three RBI.

Luke St. Amant drove in four runs for Holy Cross.

The Crusaders (20-10, 7-5) closed out their regular season with five straight district wins. Holy Cross (22-9, 9-3) finishes with two losses to end the regular season.

St. Charles Catholic wiped out Morris Jeff Community 14-0 at LaPlace in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings by the mercy rule.

The Comets put the game away immediately, scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding three more in the bottom of the third.

Jackson Jensen had three hits and three RBI while Joey Nuccio and Josh Tamplain each had two hits and two RBI to lead a 16-hit onslaught for the Comets.

Connor Dejean pitched two innings and had six strikeouts for every out he recorded for St. Charles Catholic while Dwight Berlin pitched two innings, striking out four.

St. Charles Catholic (19-9) has won nine straight games and will host Thibodaux Saturday at 1 p.m.

Morris Jeff played just its fifth game of the season and is 1-4.
