Bartlett rallies past Newman in overtime at Allstate Sugar Bowl

WESTWEGO – After surviving a one-point victory Thursday over St. Augustine in the opening round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic, Bartlett High of Tennessee was prepared to handle another close game Friday against Newman.

The Panthers did just that, rallying from a double-figure deficit to down the Greenies 48-39 in the quarterfinals of the Boys National Bracket at the Alario Center.

Center Javar Daniel was a dominant force, scoring 15 points with 11 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and a steal.

After three lead changes, Newman closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take an 11-5 lead.

Th Greenies went on an 8-0 run in the second quarter to open a 21-7 lead before taking a 23-14 halftime lead.

The Panthers turned up their defensive intensity in the third quarter, holding Newman to just four points to close to within 27-21 entering the final quarter.

Bartlett took its first lead since an early 5-4 advantage on a 3-pointer by Charvez Ambrose with 2:38 to play to take a 32-30 lead.

Newman was able to fight back twice to tie it, forcing overtime.

In the extra frame, Bartlett controlled play from start to finish, outscoring the Greenies 12-3 to pull away for the victory. Bartlett held Newman to just 16 points in the second half and overtime combined.

Ambrose finished with nine points and three rebounds.

Canin Jefferson led Newman (17-3) with 11 points and three assists while Todd Jones had nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Bartlett (14-4) advances to take on the winner of Archbishop Shaw and Northshore in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m.
