Barrios, Williams named Preseason All-Southland Women’s Basketball

FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University senior Cassidy Barrios, the 2017-18 Southland Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, headlines the 2018-19 Preseason All-Conference Teams and is joined by junior teammate Tykeria Williams on the two five-member squads.

The Southland Conference announced the teams Tuesday ahead of the 2018 Basketball Social Media Day, scheduled for tomorrow (Oct. 10) in Houston at the Toyota Center starting at 9 a.m. CT. Head coach DoBee Plaisance will partake in the media day, and the complete show will air on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. The show can be watched here.

Barrios had a career year in which she helped claim the Colonels’ first Southland Tournament championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament. She finished the season among the top three in the conference for points (17.3 ppg), rebounds (9.1 rpg), steals (2.9 spg), blocked shots (1.5 bpg) and three-point field goal percentage (.400). She is joined on the preseason teams with six other automatic selections who were all-conference picks last season.

A native of Raceland, Louisiana, Barrios also earned Southland Tournament MVP and Southland Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. Her other accolades included All-Southland Defensive and LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Williams garnered second-team preseason honors after finishing second on the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game last season, which also ranked eighth in the league. The Montgomery, Alabama native of deadly behind the arc, ranking fourth in the SLC with 2.5 made 3-pointers per game while placing seventh in percentage at .359.

Williams was one of three players to be voted onto the teams.

All 26 men’s and women’s head basketball coaches will be in attendance for Q&As at the Southland Basketball Social Media Day and interactive social media activities on the Southland’s Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts. The event is open to all media members.

Southland broadcasters Carley McCord and Lincoln Rose will also host the coaches for a show produced for ESPN3. The show will debut Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. CT, and be archived for later viewing.

The preseason teams were chosen by a poll of the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. Voters were not allowed to select their institution’s players.
