Barr went 6-3 with a 2.04 ERA and Martin shut the door nine times in 2018

GREENVILLE, N.C. – John Barr and Reeves Martin formed a deadly duo at the backend of the New Orleans Privateer bullpen in 2018. Heading into 2019, the two pitchers garnered preseason recognition after being nominated to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Watch List.

Barr made an immediate impact in his first season with the Privateers. His 2.04 earned run average was the eighth best mark in a single season in Privateer history. The right-hander also won six games and made 30 appearances, all out of the bullpen. Barr threw 66.1 innings and struck out 68 batters.

The senior out of Waynesboro, Pa. had six relief stints that lasted at least four innings. His longest was a five-inning shutout performance against Arkansas State, a game the Privateers won in 11 innings. He received Southland Conference honorable mention last season.

Martin vaulted his way up the charts in the all-time saves list after converting to the closer’s role in 2018. He recorded nine saves, which brought his career total to 12 saves, good for fourth in program history. Two more saves would push Martin to second on the list. The all-time saves leader is Ryan O’Shea with 18.

Last season, Martin recorded a 3.40 ERA in 28 appearances with four starts. He had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 55-to-15 during the season over 47.2 innings. As a reliever, Martin had a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings pitched over 24 relief appearances. He went his first nine relief outings without allowing a run.

The duo were two of four to represent the Southland Conference.

The Privateers’ season gets started on Friday, Feb. 15 against the Michigan State Spartans. First pitch for the season opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Maestri Field.
