Another close game in Game 3 of SLU’s Fall World Series
HAMMOND, La. – Will Warren, Trey Shaffer and Evan Hileman combined to limit the surging Juice Box Boyz to six hits Sunday afternoon, as the Ice Cold Pitchers snagged a 5-4 win in Game 3 of the Heart of a Lion World Series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Pitchers prevented the Juice Box Boyz from securing a series sweep, concluding Southeastern Louisiana’s fall practice period.
Warren, a freshman right-hander from Brandon, Mississippi, pitched the first four innings of Sunday’s contest, striking out seven batters and issuing only one walk. Shaffer, a fellow freshman and Mississippi native, fired 2.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts.
Hileman (1-0) earned the win, tossing 2.1 innings of shutout baseball while striking out three. Shaffer and Hileman combined to hold the Juice Box Boyz hitless over the final five innings.
The Ice Cold Pitchers began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when freshman shortstop Cody Grosse scored on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice by senior catcher Daniel Wasinger.
The Juice Box Boyz added three runs in the top of the first inning when senior outfielder Trenon Trosclair slapped a single into left field, scoring second baseman Trey Harrington. Trosclair stole second and scored on an error by Pitchers’ centerfielder Drew Avans. Junior shortstop Brennan Breaud then scored on a single through the right side by former high school teammate, Nathan Pilutti.
After a scoreless third inning, the Juice Box Boyz plated another run in the fourth when Trosclair scored on a groundout by Breaud.
The Juice Box Boyz starter Kade Granier pitched four innings, allowing two hits and striking out four batters. Junior college transfer Jared Biddy (0-1), who replaced Granier in the fifth, allowed three hits and four runs in his three innings on the mound.
The Ice Cold Pitchers pulled within a run in the fifth on a 2-run double to left center by first baseman Scottie Sanders. The Pitchers tied the game with a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Evan Pace.
Designated hitter Daniel Wasinger provided the winning run for the Ice Cold Pitchers in the eighth inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk from Juice Box Boyz reliever Bryce Tassin.
Southeastern opens its 2018 season on February 16, when the Lions host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
