6-8 forward averaged 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds for Mariner High School in 2016-17

NEW ORLEANS – Head University of New Orleans men’s basketball coach Mark Slessinger continued to add to his 2018 class with the signing of Amari Haynes to a national letter of intent. Haynes spent 2016-17 with Mariner High School in Florida before competing with Combine Academy (Charlotte) in a post-graduate program.

As a senior for Mariner High School (2016-17), Haynes averaged 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds and shot 57 percent from the field to lead the Tritons to a 23-8 record and run to the Florida Class 6A state final. It capped off three consecutive state final campaigns.

“The University of New Orleans made me feel like home,” said Haynes. “The city really reminded me of New York and that was a great feeling. Everyone in the program showed me nothing but love from the time they started recruiting me. I want to thank coach Keeth Jones (head coach at Mariner High School) for all of his help.”

“We are excited to have Amari become a part of the Privateer family,” said Slessinger. “He has a tremendous ceiling and will be a dynamic player for us for many years. He is a talented scorer and plays with incredible passion and energy.”

The 6-foot-8 Haynes is the second Mariner High School signee. In the fall signing period, Jahmel Myers inked an NLI with New Orleans.

“He comes from a great program and a coaching staff, led by Keeth Jones,” said Slessinger.
