Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball tips off Wednesday

NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament will tip off on Wednesday, December 4, with games at four locations in New Orleans. The tournament is celebrating its 65th year of action this year and has hosted many of the all-time greats in New Orleans prep basketball history. This is the 12th year that the Allstate Sugar Bowl has sponsored the event.

Wednesday’s first-round games and Thursday’s quarterfinals will be played at Jesuit, Shaw, Holy Cross and De La Salle. The semifinals (Friday) and championship (Saturday, 3 p.m.) will be played at Jesuit.

Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Boys’ Basketball Championship, Saturday, December 7

Jesuit defeated Holy Cross, 64-54, to capture the championship of the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. It was the record 12th championship in the event for the Blue Jays, who last won in 2009. Jesuit was led by tournament MVP Elijah Morgan. The 5-11 senior guard scored 16 points to pace the Blue Jays in the championship – he averaged 17.5 points per game in the tournament.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 93 Hall of Fame players, 50 Hall of Fame coaches and 18 Heisman Trophy winners in its 85-year history. The 86th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, featuring top teams from the Big 12 and the SEC, will be played on January 1, 2020. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1.6 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards and clinics. Through these efforts, the organization supports and honors nearly 100,000 student-athletes each year, while injecting over $2.5 billion into the local economy in the last decade.
