NEW ORLEANS – The Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament tipped off its 65th edition on Wednesday evening with games at four locations in New Orleans. This is the 12th year that the Allstate Sugar Bowl has sponsored the event.

CYOFirst-round winners in Wednesday’s 6 p.m. games were St. Aug, De La Salle, Lee Magnet and Central Lafourche. Central Lafourche upended defensing tournament champ Jesuit on its home court, 50-46. The top scorer in the early games was De La Salle’s John Kelly who tallied 20 points in the Cavaliers’ 72-31 blowout of St. Stanislaus. St. Aug was led by 15 points from Ashton Trufant in a 71-17 win over Lusher.

In Wednesday’s late-game action, St. Paul’s, Shaw, John Curtis and Holy Cross all emerged victorious.

Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Boys’ Basketball Championship, Saturday, December 7

Jesuit defeated Holy Cross, 64-54, to capture the championship of the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament. It was the record 12th championship in the event for the Blue Jays, who last won in 2009. Jesuit was led by tournament MVP Elijah Morgan. The 5-11 senior guard scored 16 points to pace the Blue Jays in the championship – he averaged 17.5 points per game in the tournament.

The Allstate Sugar Bowl has established itself as one of the premier college football bowl games, having hosted 28 national champions, 93 Hall of Fame players, 50 Hall of Fame coaches and 18 Heisman Trophy winners in its 85-year history. The 86th Allstate Sugar Bowl Football Classic, featuring top teams from the Big 12 and the SEC, will be played on January 1, 2020. In addition to football, the Sugar Bowl Committee annually invests over $1.6 million into the community through the hosting and sponsorship of sporting events, awards and clinics.
