METAIRIE – Alex Schoenbaum made an impact on the football field and in the business community, and his daughter Emily is looking to continue her father’s legacy.

Through the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, the Alex Schoenbaum Jewish Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of the former Ohio State All-American and founder of the Shoney’s chain of restaurants.

The first scholarships will be awarded Dec. 12 as part of an event at St. Augustine High School. The program will feature a discussion of African-American/Jewish relations by students and faith-based community leaders.

While Emily Schoenbaum and Jewish Federation CEO Arnie Fielkow will be on the same team that day, they won’t be this Saturday, when Ohio State meets Fielkow’s alma mater, Northwestern, in the Big Ten Conference championship game.
