LORMAN, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana never led Monday in a 67-45 men’s basketball loss to Alcorn State.

A Jathen Ross 3-pointer with 13:53 remaining cut the Braves’ lead to 39-33, but Alcorn State outscored XULA 28-12 thereafter.

Makye Richard, with 11 points, was XULA’s lone double-figure scorer, and he also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ross and Gary Smith scored six points apiece. Jalen King grabbed six rebounds, and Smith and Chris Ward made 3-of-3 free throws apiece.

Alcorn’s only double-figure scorer was 6-foot-7 reserve freshman forward Keondre Montgomery, who scored 12 points in 28 minutes. Montgomery grabbed six rebounds and made three of the Braves’ seven 3-pointers.

Alcorn outshot XULA 44.8 to 38.1 percent from the floor. Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds. Alcorn was plus-14 in turnovers, committing 14 and gaining 28.

Both head coaches — XULA’s Alfred Williams and Alcorn’s Landon Bussie — are XULA graduates and played basketball for XULA.

This was the first of two XULA exhibitions this season against NCAA Division I opponents. The Gold Rush will visit Louisiana-Lafayette Nov. 17. XULA is a longtime NAIA member.

The XULA men and women will play a pair of home doubleheaders this week in their Convocation Center: Wednesday against Tougaloo (women 5:30 p.m., men 7:30 p.m.) and Saturday for homecoming against Dillard (women 11 a.m., men 1 p.m.). In the Wednesday opener, Bo Browder will try to get his 500th win as head coach of the XULA women — his teams are 499-209 (.705), and this is his 23rd season.
