FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls State University defensive back Ahmani Martin has been named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week to close out the regular season, the league office announced Monday morning.

Martin, a senior from Reserve, Louisiana, set the tone right away in the Colonels’ 44-0 home victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the River Bell Classic, forcing fumbles on the Lions’ opening two drives. He totaled four solo tackles in the win and added two pass breakups as Nicholls recorded its first shutout in conference since 2007.

On the second play of the night, Martin delivered a highlight hit to pop the ball loose, and it was recovered by Darren Evans and returned inside the SLU 15 yard line. On the next play, Dontrell Taylor rushed for a touchdown for the early lead. Martin then forced another fumble on the next SLU possession, ending the Lions’ drive at the 50-yard line.

Nicholls will be hosting an opening round FCS playoff game for the second straight season as the Colonels take on Pioneer Football League champion San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. at Manning Field at John L. Guidry Stadium.
