Aces snap Baby Cakes’ win streak
METAIRIE – Ben DeLuzio homered and reached base four times and Andy Young added a pair of home runs to lead the Reno Aces to an 8-3 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Wednesday night.
The ‘Cakes lost for the first time in six August contests, ending their longest winning streak of the season.
After Eddy Alvarez slugged his ninth home run of the year in the opening frame to give New Orleans a quick 1-0 lead, Young and DeLuzio hit solo shots in the second and third innings, respectively, to put Reno ahead.
Austin Dean’s two-out double in the bottom of the third cashed in a walk to Alvarez, tying the score, and Billy Fleming homered an inning later as the ‘Cakes grabbed a short-lived advantage.
All nine batters came to the plate in the fifth against Baby Cakes starter Cody Poteet, sparked by DeLuzio’s leadoff single. Joshua Rojas followed with an RBI double to even the score, and Domingo Leyba gave Reno the lead for good with a single. Magneuris Sierra lost Kevin Cron’s fly ball to center field in the twilight, extending the inning as two more runs would score.
Poteet (1-1) was charged with six runs on 10 hits in five innings and took his first Triple-A defeat.
Joel Payamps (2-1) scattered three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Aces, who have won 12 of their last 14 games. He combined with three relievers to hold New Orleans without a hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position.
The teams continue the three-game set on Thursday at 7 p.m.
