HAMMOND, La. – Recent history has shown the willingness of Southeastern Louisiana University offensive coordinator Greg Stevens to make ample use of his tight ends and with several talented options at his disposal the trend should continue in 2022.

During Stevens’ second stint in Hammond, Southeastern has had multiple All-Southland Conference tight ends in Nolan Givan and Bransen Schwebel. SLU head coach Frank Scelfo believes this year’s Lions have several candidates to join that club. Southeastern returns Ivan Drobocky, Connor Briggs, Cade Collier and Tanner Olsen, while newcomer Jacob Logan is expected to be an immediate factor.

“We use the tight end as much as anyone in the country,” Scelfo commented. “When we have an effective tight end, they’ve caught 40-60 balls and been a major part of our offense. This is probably the deepest group we’ve had in terms of guys we feel comfortable with.”

Logan, who will spend his final collegiate season in Hammond after transferring from Northwestern State, has impressed Scelfo with his abilities in the passing game.

“Jacob is an experienced guy, who is physical in the run game and has shown good hands and route running ability,” Scelfo said. “We’re excited about the number of options this group gives us. We’re going to see this group continue to evolve and we expect multiple guys to be key contributors for us from the tight end position.”

Southeastern will welcome season ticket holders to the Season Ticket Pickup Party Saturday. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. – noon in conjunction with the No. 16/17 Lions’ morning practice. SLU supporters the Dukes of Hammond will host a tailgate event in the grassy area adjacent to the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics.

The 2022 season of Inside Southeastern Football with Frank Scelfo debuts Sunday.
