2022 SLU Football Preseason Position Report No. 6: Linebackers
HAMMOND, La. – With several veterans poised to step into bigger roles and a talented newcomer joining the mix, the No. 16/17 Southeastern Louisiana University football team has high hopes for its linebacker corps heading into the 2022 season.
2020 All-Southland Conference performer Herman Christophe is the most veteran performer among the group. Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo has been pleased with the progress of newcomer Anthony Britton Jr., as well as returners Donte’ Daniels and Tommy Lee.
“We’re confident where we are with our top four guys,” Scelfo commented. “All four guys can run and play physical. They just need the experience of playing together, but they’re all interchangeable and really fit what we’re trying to do defensively.”
Christophe has been near the top of the team in tackles in each of the past two seasons, so he’s the most proven among the Lion linebackers. Britton Jr. has started to stand out more as he’s become acclimated to the SLU system. The Stockbridge, Georgia native was a first team All-Southern Conference performer at The Citadel before coming to Hammond.
“That position group is close-knit and (first-year linebacker coach) Dustin Landry has done a good job developing the camaraderie in that room,” Scelfo said. “After transferring in, Anthony has become more comfortable and has embracing a vocal leadership role among the linebackers.”
Southeastern will welcome season ticket holders to the Season Ticket Pickup Party Saturday. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. – noon in conjunction with the No. 16/17 Lions’ morning practice. SLU supporters the Dukes of Hammond will host a tailgate event in the grassy area adjacent to the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics.
