2020 Preseason All-Louisiana College Football teams

The Pelican state is abundantly blessed with college football talent. It is no easy task to decide the best players at each position from Louisiana’s college teams.

As been my usual annual drill, I have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd team on both sides of the ball.

1st team Offense
QB – Myles Brennan – LSU – Junior (6’4, 212) has been given the keys to the Tigers’ high powered offense. He has been biding his time and is raring to go.
RB – Elijah Mitchell – ULL – Senior (5’11, 221) 1,147 yards rushing last season with 16 touchdowns. He has 4,312 career rushing yards. and 47 touchdowns. He is 335 yards shy of becoming the Cajuns’ all time leading rusher and 7 TD’s short of being the leader in that category.
RB – Josh Johnson – ULM – Senior (5’9, 216) 1,298 yards (6.5 average) 11 TD’s in ’19. Workhorse back, super burst.
RB – Julien Gum – Nicholls – Junior (5’9, 216) 1,232 yards, 16 touchdowns last season. Single season record for Colonels rushing TD’s.
WR – Ja’Marr Chase – LSU – Junior (6’1, 205) 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner with 84 catches 1,780 yards and 20 TD’s.
WR – Terrace Marshall – LSU – Junior (6’4, 200) 46 catches 671 yards 13 touchdowns. Similar to Michael Clayton.
WR – Daijean Dixon – Nicholls – Senior (6’4, 200) 64 catches 1,044 yards, 14 TD’s. Tough catches, big play potential.
TE – Arik Gilbert – LSU – Freshman (6’6, 253) Yes, I know that he is just a freshman, but a very special player. (2019) 101 grabs 1,760 yards and 14 scores. Within a year or two , I expect him to be in the Mackey Award conversation.
OL – Anthony Bradford – LSU – Redshirt freshman (6’4 1/2, 355) called by staff, perhaps the best OL on Tigers’ squad this season.
OL – P.J. Burkhalter – Nicholls – Senior (6’3, 330) FCS All American, Conference Off. lineman of the year. The Colonels have three former OL who made it to the NFL He should be the fourth.
OL – Ed Ingram – LSU – Junior (6’4, 315) 12 starts as freshman.
OL – Dare Rosenthal – LSU – Soph. (6’7, 323) possesses star quality and super athletic skills.
OL – Corey Dublin – Tulane – Senior (6’4, 308) four-year starter, 37 starts for the Green Wave. High football IQ.

1st Team Defense
DL – Tyler Shelvin – LSU – Junior (6’3, 356) Dominating presence. 39 tackles, 3 TFL. Will assume larger role in ’20.
DL – Neil Farrell – LSU – Senior (6’4, 300) Ready for big season. 46 tackles, 7 TFL, 3 sacks last season.
DL – Patrick Johnson – Tulane – Senior (6’3, 255) 25 starts. 10.5 sacks in 2018. Outstanding pass rusher.
DL – Milton Williams – Louisiana Tech – Junior (6’4, 271) Crowley High School 59 tackles, 9 TFL, 5.5 sacks in ’19. Ring leader for Bulldog front.
LB – Ja’Quay Pough – Northwestern State – Senior (6’1, 230) transfer from Texas Tech. 109 stops last season, 6 TFL and 3 sacks. 22 tackles in single game against Incarnate Word. Game changing skills.
LB – Jabril Cox – LSU – Senior (6’3, 233).4.55 speed. Twice FCS All American. Transfer from North Dakota State. 258 career tackles, 32 TFL, 14 sacks and 6 interceptions.
LB – Jordan Lewis – Southern – Junior (6’3, 205) 11 tackles for loss, 6 sacks.
LB – Alex Ramos – SLU – Senior (6’2, 230) 80 tackles, 10.5 TFL, 6 sacks last season.
DB – Derel Stingley – LSU – Soph. (6’1, 195) 6 interceptions as freshman. Called #1 CB in college football.
DB – Ferlando Jordan – SLU – Junior (6’0, 170) 5 interceptions, 8 passes broken up. 3rd team FCS All American.
DB – Jacoby Stevens – LSU – Senior (6’3, 225) 92 stops,9 TFL, 5 sacks, 3 interceptions. Skills to play safety or OLB.
DB – Kevin Moore III – Nicholls – Senior (6’0, 205) 112 tackles in ’19, Texas Tech transfer.

Louisiana College Coach of the Year – Ed Orgeron – LSU
Offensive Player of the Year – Ja’Marr Chase – WR – LSU
Defensive Player of the Year – Derek Stingley – CB – LSU
Newcomer of the Year – TE Arik Gilbert – LSU

2nd Team Offense
QB – Levi Lewis – ULL – Senior (5’11, 175) the lefty has made tremendous strides. (2019) 3,050 yards, 26 TD’s/4 int. 64.2%. First UL QB to exceed 3,000 yards in single season.
RB – Chris Curry – LSU – Soph.(6’0, 215) could be powerback for Tigers. Reminds me of Stevan Ridley.
RB – Trey Ragas – ULL – Senior (5’11, 227) Shaw alum had 820 yards rushing and 11 TD’s last fall.
RB – Justin Henderson – Louisiana Tech – Senior (5’10, 228) 1,062 yards last season (5.6 average) 15 TD’s. Has just scratched surface,
WR – Austin Mitchell – SLU – Senior (5’9, 170) 57 catches, 896 yards, 8 touchdowns. Nephew of NFL’s Brian Mitchell, ex. Cajun.
WR – Cyron Sutton – MacNeese – Senior (5’10, 186) 66 catches, 944 yards, 8 scores. Smooth route runner.
TE – Josh Pederson – ULM – Junior (6’5, 232) 43 catches, 567 yards, 9 touchdowns. Dad, Doug Pederson, head coach Eagles.
OL – Willie Allen – La.Tech – Senior (6’6, 343) 13 starts at LT last season. NFL potential.
OL – Austin Deculus – LSU – Senior (6’7, 322) 26 starts. Born Mamou, Louisiana High grader.
OL – O’Cyrus Torrence – ULL – Soph. (6’5, 342) a mauler, 13 starts as true freshman.
OL – Max Mitchell – ULL – Junior (6’6, 300) Neville High School 14 Starts in 2019.
OL – T.J. Fiailoa – ULM – Senior (6’4, 312). Started as freshman. Cousin former Dallas Cowboy, Mark Tunei.

2nd Team Defense
DL – Zi’Yon Hill – ULL – Junior (6’2, 280) 53 tackles,2.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks
DL – Ronald Cherry – SLU – Senior (6’2, 295) 43 stops,125. TFL, 5 sacks. Anchor of Lions’ D – Line.
DL – Glen Logan – LSU – Senior (6’4, 309) 22 starts, Great quickness.
DL – Cody Rascoe – McNeese – Senior (6’2, 257) 42 stops, 11 TFL,. 9 sacks, 8 QB hurries. Disruptive off edge.
LB – Damone Clark – LSU – Junior (6’4, 232) 50 tackles, 4 TFL, 3.5 sacks. Should be a leader this season.
LB – Kody Fulp – McNeese – Junior (6’2, 226) North Texas transfer. 83 tackles, 5 TFL in 2019.
LB – Rashard Harding – ULM – Senior (5’11, 216) Carencro High School 60 tackles, 8 TFL, 2 sacks last season.
LB – Jomard Valsin – NW State – Junior (6’1, 237) 62 stops, 9 TFL, 3.5 sacks.
DB – Tamaurice Smith – Southern – Junior (5’9, 178) Transfer from Memphis. 13 passes defended, 5 interceptions last fall.
DB – Chase Kuerchen – Tulane – Junior (6’1, 210) paced Wave with 76 tackles and a pair of picks.
DB – Kary Vincent – LSU – Senior (5’10, 185) 4.38 forty, 10.04 hundred. 47 stops, 2 TFL, 4 interceptions, 8 PBU.
DB – Corey Slaughter – ULM – Senior (5’10, 176) starter as true freshman. Allowed lowest passer rating (2019) 13.5%. Lowest completion (28.8%). 5 interceptions, 1 for TD last season. Super Cover skills.

3rd Team Offense
QB – Lindsey Scott – Nicholls – Senior (5’11, 220) Big shoes to fill with Chase Fourcade gone. 4th college stop , 2015 Louisiana Gatorade Player of Year.
RB – Corey Dauphine – Tulane – Senior (6’0, 195) 10.55 hundred, 21.23 200 hundred meters. Granted 6th season. HR threat.
RB – Devon Benn – Southern – Senior (5’8, 180) John Curtis product had 806 yards, 8 TD’s for Jags in ’19.
RB – Tyrion Davis – Price – LSU – Soph. (6’1, 226) 6 touchdowns in 2019. Could become feature RB in rotation. Hard nosed, downhill.
WR – Javon Connor – SLU – Senior (5’10, 170) 4.38 forty. Landry-Walker High School 57 catches,679 yards 7 TD’s last season.
WR – Racey McMath – LSU – Senior (6’3, 221) 4.5 forty. Physical mismatch. Will gain larger role in 2020.
WR – Hunter Register – Southern – Senior (6’2, 212) 43 catches, 610 yards, 11 touchdowns. Transfer from Minnesota.
TE – Tyrick James – Tulane – Junior (6’2, 246) Developing as TE. Good route runner.
OL – Chasen Hines – LSU – Junior (6’3, 336) tremendous power, converted DT, should hold center spot this season.
OL – Kenny Sheldon – NW State – Junior (6’2, 281) overcame thyroid cancer, 22 starts last 2 seasons.
OL – Kody Russey – Louisiana Tech – Senior (6’1, 290) 35 starts, 4 time C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
OL – Sincere Haynesworth – Tulane – Soph. (6’1, 315) 5 starts in ’19. Ready for next step.
OL – Jake Gore – NW State – Junior (6’2, 272) 12 starts at RT.

3rd Team Defense
DL – DeAndre Williams – Tulane – Senior (6’3, 290) Scotlandville High School 68 Tackles,4 TFL in 2019. Very active.
DL – Kerry Starks – ULM – Senior (6’2, 235) 45 stops,10 TFL, 5 sacks.
DL – Jeffery Johnson – Tulane – Junior (6’3, 320) beats double team blocking.
DL – Andre Jones – ULL – Junior (6’5, 242) Varnado High School. 42 tackles, 7 TFL, 2 sacks. Made big splash last season.
LB – Joe Dillon – ULL – Senior (6’3, 218) 45 stops, 10 TFL, 8 sacks. Has 18.5 career sacks, needs 3 more schools’ all time leader.
LB – Julius Johnson – Louisiana College – Senior (5’9, 203) “Field Mouse” Sam Mills – like LB. Always around ball. (2019) 68 stops, 8 TFL, (2018) 82 stops. Kaplan High School product.
LB – Kordell Williams – McNeese – Junior (5’10, 198) 63 stops, 8.5 TFL. Carencro High School
LB – Marvin Moody – Tulane – Senior (6’2, 230)56 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 2 sacks. Diagnoses plays quickly.
DB – Percy “Flash” Butler – ULL – Junior (6’0, 190) 54 tackles last season. Converted WR. Plaquemine High School
DB – DeVanir Martin – Grambling – Junior (5’9, 165) 44 tackles, 3 interceptions, 9 PBU.
DB – Todd Harris – LSU – Junior (5’11, 186) Sure tackler. good in coverage. Injury limited him to 3 games. Highly intellgent.
DB – Jarius Monroe – Nicholls – Soph (6’1, 195) 43 stops, 13 passes defended as freshman. Terrific ball skills. East St. John High.
