10 kickers and punters added to McNeese’s All-75th Anniversary Football Team

LAKE CHARLES – Only two categories remain for the revealing of the McNeese Football 75th Anniversary team and on Tuesday, the team added kickers and punters.

A total of 10 players have been named to the squad with one player, Don Stump, selected as both a kicker and a punter.

Members of the 75th Anniversary team will be recognized at halftime of the Oct. 6 football game between McNeese and Abilene Christian. For more information, contact Matthew Bonnette by email at wbonnette@mcneese.edu.

The 2018 football marks the 75th year of Cowboy football.

McNeese Football 75th Anniversary All-Kickers/Punters Team

Blake Bercegeay, K (2005-08) – 2006 AP, STATS, Don Hansen’s Football All-American… two-time first team All-Southland Conference… 2006 first team All-Louisiana… 2005 SLC Freshman of the Year… school and Cowboy Stadium record with 10 PATs kicked in a game against West Virginia Tech in 2006… school record holder with five consecutive FGs kicked in a game (vs. Northwestern State, 2006)… made a 51-yard field goal against Southern Mississippi in 2005 that ranks as the sixth-longest in school history… ranks second all-time with 151 PATs made and third with 48 field goals made… ranked third all-time with 295 points scored… led the Cowboys in scoring from 2005-07… named to the Southland Conference 2000s All-Decade Team.

Jean Breaux, P (2012-15) – First team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors… 2014 and 2015 McNeese Special Teams MVP… 9,000 career punt yards on 219 punts for a career average of 41.1, ranking him second on the school’s all-time list… his punting yards is ranked sixth all-time while his number of punts is ranked sixth as well.

Shonz LaFrenz, K (1996-99) – 1997 All-American (Sportsticker)… 1998 and 1999 All-American (STATS, ESPN/USA Today)… three-time first team All-Southland Conference… two-time first team All-Louisiana… Southland Conference and McNeese co-record holder with 66 career field goals made… ranked second on the team and in the SLC with 94 career FG attempted… currently seventh in the conference in career FG percentage at 70.2 percent… led the Cowboys in scoring in 1996 and 1997… SLC scoring leader in 1997 with 117 points (then a school record; now second all-time)… career 324 points scored, second all-time in school history… school and conference record holder with 25 FGs made in a season (1997)… kicked the game-winning field goal at Delaware with no time left on the clock to send the Cowboys to the 1997 FCS National Championship game… named to the Southland Conference 1990s All-Decade Team… SLC 50th Anniversary All-Time Football Team as 1st Team Kicker.

Jose Larios, K (1992-95) – 1993 All-American (AP, Sports Network)… three-time All-Southland Conference… two-time All-Louisiana… four-time team scoring leader… All-time McNeese and Southland Conference record holder with 356 points scored… career record holder with 158 PATs made and tied for the career record with 66 field goals made, also a Southland Conference record…  1993 and 1994 McNeese and Southland Conference scoring leader… 110 points scored in 1995 ranks as the eighth-most in a single-season in conference history… school record holder and ranks eighth in conference history in PAT kick percentage at 96.93… named to the Southland Conference 1990s All-Decade Team.

Josh Lewis, K (2009-12) – First team All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana… ranks third all-time in McNeese history with 144 PATs made and fifth with 43 field goals made… career 273 points, ranking him fourth all-time in school history… led the Cowboys in scoring in 2010, 2011 and 2012… kicked a game-winning 52-yard field goal as time expired to beat Southeastern Louisiana in 2010, the longest game-winner in school history.

John Marino, K (2001-04) – Two-time first team All-Southland Conference… McNeese and Southland Conference scoring leader in 2002 and 2003… one held the school record with 52 made PATs in a season (2002) and is now ranked as the third-most… connected on a 40-yard field goal with less than a minute to play to seal a 24-20 win over Montana in the 2002 FCS quarterfinals… named to the Southland Conference 2000s All-Decade Team.

Pat Neck, P (1990-93) – 1991 All-American (Sports Network)… three-time first team All-Southland Conference and two-time first team All-Louisiana… school career record holder and second all-time in Southland Conference history with 293 total punts… had a 40.8 career yards per punt average, ranking third all-time in school history… ranks second all-time in school history with 9,758 total punt yards… named to the Southland Conference 1990s All-Decade Team.

Jimmy Poirier, P (1987-90) – All-Southland Conference… ranked second all-time in McNeese and fourth in Southland Conference history with 284 total punts… school record holder with 11,225 career punting yards… ranked sixth all-time in McNeese history with a 39.5 yards per punt average.

Eric Roberts, K (1989-91) – Two-time first team All-Southland Conference and 1991 first team All-Louisiana… 1991 McNeese team MVP and Outstanding Offensive MVP… honorable mention All-American… school record holder and ranked fourth in Southland Conference history in career field goal percentage at 71.7 percent with a minimum of 50 attempts… led the Cowboys in scoring in 1990 and 1991… holds the school record for longest field goal made at 54 yards against Northern Iowa in 1991… single-game co-record holder with five field goals made in a game (vs. Eastern Illinois in 1990)… single game record holder with six FG attempts, also against Eastern Illinois… ranks eighth all-time in school history with 38 field goals made… kicked a 28-yard field goal with two seconds to play to lift McNeese to a 19-17 win over Sam Houston State in the default 1991 SLC title game… named to the Southland Conference 1990s All-Decade Team.

Don Stump, K/P (1978-81) – No doubt the best combined punter/place kicker in school history… four-time first time All-Southland Conference and two-time first team All-Louisiana… led the Cowboys in scoring from 1978-80 and was the 1980 SLC scoring champion with 69 points… averaged 40 yards or more per punt from 1978-80… school single-season record holder with a 43.8 average in 1979… single-game record holder with a 51.6 average against Louisiana Tech in 1981… McNeese career record holder with a 41.5 average per punt which still ranks as the seventh-best in conference history… set a school single-game and Cowboy Stadium record with an 81-yard punt against West Texas State in 1979 which was matched in 2017 by Alex Kjellsten… named to the Southland Conference 1980s All-Decade Team… a 2002 inductee into the McNeese Sports Hall of Fame.
