Volleyball Playoffs: Many locals schools punch their tickets to state tourney in Kenner

A total of 11 teams from the New Orleans area secured their places in the state tournament next week at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner with wins Thursday night.

In Division III, fourth-seeded Ursuline took out No. 13 seed St. Martinville 25-16, 25-16, 25-10 to advance to the state tournament and the quarterfinals for the ninth consecutive year since Jay Jay Juan arrived at the school in 2009.

Jessica Addvensky led the Lions (31-10) with 14 kills and four blocks, Natalie Richard had 12 kills and four block and Nadia Fairley had seven kills. Olivia Weinstein dished out 31 assists, Macie Grubbs had 15 digs and Erin Goebel had 11 pass receptions.

“We were pleased with the effort tonight,” Juan said. “We are just trying to peak at the right time, to get ready for the Pontchartrain Center. We took care of business. We were ready to play and performed well.”

Ursuline advances to face 12th-seeded Westlake next Thursday in Kenner.

“I don’t know much about Westlake yet but we will familiarize ourselves about them tomorrow,” Juan said. “We know we they will be a formidable side and we will prepare well. The goal is still in front of us.”

No. 10 seed De La Salle continued its last season surge, upsetting Northside 27-25, 25-22, 26-24 on the road to advance to the quarterfinals in Kenner. The Cavaliers (22-19) advance to face No. 2 seed St. Michael the Archangel.

In Division IV, top seed and three-time defending state champion Pope John Paul II routed 17th-seed Haynes 25-11, 25-6, 25-10. The Jaguars (35-5) advance to take on No. 8 seed Academy of The Sacred Heart of New Orleans (12-13) in the quarterfinals next Thursday.

The Cardinals whipped ninth-seeded Evangel 25-10, 25-10, 25-4.

Fifth-seeded Newman fought off No. 12 seed John Curtis Christisn 25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-13. The Greenies (29-10) advance to face the No. 4 seed, Archbishop Hannan, in the quarterfinals.

The Hawks (26-8) blitzed 13th-seeded St. Charles Catholic 25-2, 25-5, 25-11.

Allee Morris led the way with 12 kills while Caroline Standl had seven kills. Grace Lagalante had 29 assists.

Sixth-seeded Riverside took care of No. 11 seed Catholic of New Iberia 25-14, 25-12, 25-18. The Rebels (31-11) advance to the round of eight to face third-seeded University High.

No. 10 seed Northlake Christian went on the road and upset seventh-seeded Episcopal 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-20.

The Wolverines (16-11) advance to face No. 2 seed Notre Dame, who ousted 15th-seeded Thomas Jefferson 25-17, 25-3, 25-5.

In Division V, top seed and defending state champion Country Day took out district rival and 16th-seeded Crescent City Christian 25-11, 25-6, 25-8. The Cajuns (34-6) advance to take on eighth-seeded Episcopal of Acadiana in the quarterfinals.

Sixth seed St. Martin’s Episcopal advanced with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-23 victory over 11th-seeded Ascension Catholic. The Saints (26-12) will take on No. 3 seed Ascension Episcopal in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded McGehee ousted No. 18 seed Westminster Christian 25-8, 25-9, 25-20. The Hawks (42-3) move into the round of eight to face seventh-seeded Catholic of Pointe Coupee next Thursday.
