Tulane outfielder Witherspoon named preseason American Athletic Conference

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane baseball junior outfielder Grant Witherspoon has been named to the American Athletic Conference Preseason Team, the league office announced Thursday.

Witherspoon hit .299 with 48 runs, 36 RBI and 16 extra base hits last year, including five home runs and 10 doubles. The Lakewood, Colo., native led the team with 10 stolen bases and four outfield assists, and was second with 67 hits in 56 games. He is the Green Wave leading returning producer of home runs, hits, doubles, RBI and runs.

In two seasons, Witherspoon has hit .285 and collected 124 hits, 81 runs, 16 doubles, eight home runs, 61 RBI and 15 steals, alongside 13 assists from the outfield.

Witherspoon is one of 15 letterwinners and just two position starters returning for the Green Wave in 2018. The Wave will feature 21 newcomers to the squad, which begins its second season under head coach Travis Jewett Feb. 16 at home against Wright State.
