It figured to be close. It could not get any closer.

Fifth-seeded Destrehan and fourth-seed and defending state champion Lakeshore squared off in Mandeville in the girls Division II state quarterfinals Saturday.

It took penalty kicks to decide the issue and the Wildcats emerged victorious 5-4 after the two sides played to a scoreless tie through regulation and a pair of overtime periods.

Elizabeth Kelly put the deciding penalty kick in the net for Destrehan. The Titans finish the season 13-10.

Destrehan (15-6-1) advances to the state semifinals to face top-seed St. Thomas More in Lafayette Friday. The Cougars advanced previously with a 1-0 victory over eighth-seed Ben Franklin.

In the Division III quarterfinals, fifth-seed E.D. White Catholic got a first half goal from Ann-Marie Schwaner and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory at fourth-seeded Teurlings Catholic. Karli Toups was outstanding in-goal for E.D. White, pitching a shutout.

The Cardinals (9-6-1) advance to the Division III semifinals to take on the winner of top-seed Vandebilt Catholic and eight-seeded North DeSoto, who square off Monday at 4 p.m. in Houma.

The Rebels end their season 8-3-3.
