Riverside, St. Thomas More among expected first day winners in Sunkist Shootout
At the Sunkist Shootout hosted by St Thomas More in Lafayette in an exciting first day of basketball, six teams emerged victorious.
Two games featured a couple of the hottest team in Louisiana. The Riverside Rebels took on the Evangel Christian Eagles and the host Cougars faced their Acadiana neighbors, the Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators.
Riverside suffered a delay in their bus ride to Lafayette, taking a couple of hours longer than anticipated but eventually found stride in a 58-45 win over Evangel.
The Rebels started off sluggish but had a lead after one quarter 15-13 over Evangel. Two 3-pointers by Garland Robertson to increased their lead to 23-18 with 3:40 to play in the first half. Evangel got within striking distance when Justin Holmes hit a basket with 2:05 to play before Riverside then went on a 5-0 run to close the half and take a 28-22 lead to the break.
The second half saw Riverside recharged and running like the Rebels we know. An 8-0 run to start the second half gave Riverside breathing room but Evangel battled back to 38-29 to end the third quarter.
Kash Foley hit a 3 pointer with 7:40 to play in the game but Evangel countered with a 6-0 run to pull within six with 6:50 to go. Riverside had an answer for the Eagles run with another three ball by Foley. The Eagles would get no closer.
Riverside was led by Garland Robertson with 17 points, Jeremiah Bigham with 13 points and Gage Larvadian and Jalen Banks each with 10 points
Malik Cooper paced Evangel with 19 points and Justin Holmes added 13 points.
St. Thomas More’s opener with Ascension Episcooal was a meeting of mentor vs. pupil. Danny Broussard of STM faced Eric Mouton of Ascension Episcopal, and the mentor had the better end of matters. STM easily handled the Blue Gators, 77-30.
The Cougars enjoyed a 39-13 halftime lead and contined their dominance to advance to face St. Thomas Aquinas.
STM was led by Will Kreamer and Carter Domingue with 10.
Ascension Episcopal was paced by Eli Mouton with 17.
