USA Baseball collegiate national teamWhen LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri is done with the 2018 season, he’ll switch hats from LSU to USA and serve as coach of USA Baseball’s collegiate national team. His staff will have a lot of former connections.

USA Baseball announced the coaching staff Tuesday – East Carolina coach Cliff Godwin, Virginia coach Brian O’Connor, New York Yankees special assistant Jim Hendry and St. Thomas coach Jorge Perez.

Godwin and O’Connor were assistants to Mainieri at LSU and Notre Dame, respectively. Hendry, the former head coach at Creighton who went on to an 11-year run as general manager of the Chicago Cubs, is a longtime friend of Mainieri’s. And Perez and Mainieri were teammates at the University of New Orleans.

Also on the staff as bullpen coach is Trent Forshag, a backup catcher at LSU the last two seasons who is serving as a student manager in 2018, who will serve as bullpen coach. Forshag prepped at Jesuit.
