Magic Man’s Opening Day Selections From the Fair Grounds

Today marks the beginning of the 146th racing season here at the Fair Grounds with a Starlight Saturday card. Although I should be naturally excited – and for the racing, I am – as a traditionalist I strongly believe the Fair Grounds should ONLY open on Thanksgiving Day. It is a unique tradition to the local folks, and CDI in recent years has deviated from the norm. I sincerely hope that they turn back to a natural tradition and starting next year the Fair Grounds goes back to its rightful opening spot on Thanksgiving Day 2018.

Before I give you my picks, let us look ahead to what we can expect this upcoming season. First off, we have two Breeders Cup Champions here for the winter as Distaff queen Forever Unbridled and Classic champ Gun Runner will make their base here. Sadly, they will not run here since both will prep for the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream early next year. Selfishly I would love for them to use a prep race here but realistically that is not going to happen.

As we look at the jockey colony it obviously is led by defending champion Florent Geroux who is the regular rider of Gun Runner. He looks like he is going to be among the favorites to win another riding title. We welcome back Corey Lanerie to the Fair Grounds and he will in my opinion have a good season. Obviously, you have James Graham and Brian Hernandez Jr. who will also do well. A brand new face to the Fair Grounds jockey colony is Chantal Sutherland who has had a successful run on the West Coast. It is interesting that she has decided to winter here but I for one am not complaining as she is very talented and also will in my opinion do well.

Shifting to the trainers’ race, it is led by defending champion Brad Cox who really broke out last season in winning his first training title last season. The usual suspects will be back to challenge him as Steve Asmussen and Tom Amoss should figure big this season.

Of course this season has 2 centerpiece days. First up is the annual Louisiana Champions Day featuring 11 races amongst a plethora of divisions of Louisiana Breds.  That will happen in December. We also have 5 Starlight cards this season featuring not just great racing but great entertainment as well. The 2nd centerpiece day is of course Louisiana Derby day where the best of the best will run to see who takes that final step to the Kentucky Derby. The New Orleans Handicap as well as the Fair Grounds Oaks will support the Louisiana Derby on the same card. It should be another exceptional meet and as mentioned I wish it started on Thanksgiving but hey we get going today. Hopefully the Magic Man will provide plenty of winning picks throughout the season and here goes as we get the 146th season of racing started.
