Phillies RHP Aaron Nola

While he is pitching for one of the worst teams in Major League baseball, former Catholic High and LSU star Aaron Nola is pitching like one of the best pitchers in Major League baseball for the Phillies.

Nola improved to 9-7 with a very good 3.02 ERA, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings in a 3-1 victory over the Mets on Aug. 12. Nola has allowed two runs or fewer in his last 10 starts, the most in the Majors this season, and sports a superb 1.71 ERA in that amazing stretch.

Former St. Thomas More and LSU outfielder Mikie Mahtook continues to sizzle for Detroit. Mahtook has multi-hit games in eight of his last 11 games to raise his average to .300 with 11 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 27 RBI for the Tigers.

Former Eunice High and LSU-Eunice catcher Stuart Turner belted his first home run of the season for Cincinnati in an 8-3 win at San Diego on Aug. 9.

At Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees) of the International League, former LSU reliever Nick Rumbelow continues his brilliant return from Tommy John surgery. Rumbelow has now pitched in 11 games without allowing a run. Rumbelow is 5-0 with his perfect ERA with four saves.

At El Paso (San Diego Padres) of the Pacific Coast League, former St. Paul’s and LSU star Ryan Schimpf has homered in four of his last six games and has a five-game hit streak to raise his average to .228 with 19 home runs and 41 RBI for the Chihuahuas.

At Double-A Pensacola (Cincinnati Reds) of the Southern League, former St. Paul’s and Southeastern Louisiana pitcher Tanner Rainey picked up his first win of the year Monday night in a 9-7 home victory over Mobile. Rainey is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in six appearances for the Blue Wahoos.

At Double-A Altoona (Pittsburgh Pirates) of the Eastern League, former Riverside and Southeastern Louisiana hurler Tate Scioneaux picked up his 12th save Tuesday night, pitching a scoreless ninth inning and striking out one in a 5-3 win at Portland. Scioneaux is 6-5 with a 1.92 ERA.

At Class A Bradenton (Pittsburgh Pirates) of the Florida State League, former Tulane star Stephen Alemais went 7-for-8 in consecutive games on Aug. 13-14 to raise his average to .383 with three doubles and 15 RBI.

At Palm Beach (St. Louis Cardinals) of the Florida State League, former UL-Lafayette hurler Eric Carter picked up his first win and his first save this past week for the Cardinals. Carter is 1-0 with a perfect ERA in six appearances with three saves.

At Vermont Lake (Oakland Athletics) of the New York-Penn League, former Brother Martin and LSU slugger Greg Deichmann has a six-game hit streak (8-for-24/.333) to raise his average to .324 with seven doubles, three triples, four home runs and 20 RBI. Deichmann homered in consecutive games Aug. 11-12 for the Monsters.

At Kane County (Arizona Diamondbacks) of the Midwest League, former LSU pitcher Riley Smith won consecutive games on Aug. 10 and Aug. 15 to improve to 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA for the Cougars.

At Class A Eugene, former LSU star Alex Lange is showing why he was a first-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs.

In a 2-1 loss to Spokane Monday night, Lange pitched three innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out five in his third outing as a professional.

At Auburn (Washington Nationals) of the New York-Penn League, former Sam Houston star Kameron Esthay has a six-game hit streak (9-for-23/.391) to raise his average to .290 with 10 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 18 RBI for the Doubledays.
