Girls Basketball Playoffs: Warren Easton, John Curtis, Dominican, Ursuline, St. Mary’s, St. Katharine, STA advance to state semifinals

It was a good night for seven area teams who advanced to the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA state girls basketball tournament with victories Thursday evening.

In Class 4A, fourth-seed Warren Easton downed fifth-seeded Bossier 57-31. After a very close first half, the Lady Eagles dominated the second half, pulling away for the victory.

Bossier led 10-7 after one quarter before Warren Easton took a 22-21 lead by halftime. The Lady Eagles put the game away with a decisive 16-0 third quarter to take a 38-21 lead. The Eagles scored the first 25 points of the second half.

Casey Harris led Warren Easton (23-8) with 17 points while Cabria Lewis had 13 points and 10 rebounds as Easton won for the 16th straight time. Chloe Walker led Bossier (24-6) with 10 points.

Warren Easton advances to the semifinals at Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria to face top-seed Benton next Tuesday at 3 p.m. Benton held off eighth-seeded Carencro 52-46.

In Division I, top-seed and defending state champion John Curtis Christian moved on with a convincing 72-30 win over ninth-seed St. Joseph’s Academy at River Ridge.

The Lady Patriots jumped all over the Redstickers, taking a 31-7 lead after one quarter before leading 41-14 at halftime. It was 60-18 after three quarters.

Jerkaila Jordan led Curtis ( with 19 points, Tulane signee Dynah Jones had 17 points and Abryhia Irons added 11. Madison Henderson topped St. Joseph’s Academy (7-20) with 12 points.

Curtis (29-1) has now won 23 straight games. The Lady Patriots advance to the semifinals at Alexandria to take on fifth-seed Evangel Christian next Thursday at 11 a.m. The Eagles went to Lakeview and upset fourth-seed Mount Carmel 41-37.

Also in Division I, third-seed Dominican trailed for three quarters before overcoming sixth-seed Scotlandville 38-35.

In a see-saw affair, the Lady Hornets led 12-8 after one quarter and 20-13 at halftime. Domincan cut the deficit to 29-28 after three quarters before rallying to win in the final frame.

Freshman Emily Adams led Dominican (24-7) with 14 points while Kylie Barre had eight points. Bralyn Tate topped Scotlandville (19-14) with 13 points while Autumn Spears had eight points.

Dominican advances to take on second-seed McKinley next Thursday at 1 p.m. in Alexandria in the semifinals. The Lady Panthers bounced seventh-seed Archbishop Chapelle 46-15.

In Division II, fourth-seed Lee Magnet downed fifth-seed Cabrini 79-61 while third-seed Ursuline Academy whipped fifth-seed St. Louis Catholic 49-26.

The Lions led 13-7 after one quarter and 24-11 at halftime. It was 35-15 after three quarters.

Kourtney Weber led Ursuline (24-4) with 24 points while Kennedi Jackson added nine points. Briona Allison topped the Saints (14-13) with nine points while Alyx Hardy had seven points.

Ursuline advances to take on the winner of the quarterfinal matchup pitting 10th-seed St. Thomas More at second-seed Loyola Prep, who play tonight.

The big upset came in Division III where St. Mary’s Academy went to Covington and shocked top-seed and defending state champion Northlake Christian 62-57 in an overtime thriller.

The Wolverines led 13-12 after one quarter and expanded the lead to 30-20 by halftime. The Cougars bounced back strong, outscoring Northlake Christian 23-13 in the third quarter to tie the game 43-43 going to the final quarter. The two teams each scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for overtime.

Freshman Tomyree Thompson was terrific for St. Mary’s Academy (12-17), scoring 30 points while Kia Batiste added 16 for the Cougars. Kyren Whittington led Northlake Christian (24-2) with 23 points while Natalie Newberry had 16.

St. Mary’s Academy heads to Alexandria to take on fifth-seed Riverside next Wednesday morning at 11:30. The Lady Rebels went on the road and downed fourth-seed Notre Dame 48-45.

Sixth-seed St. Katharine Drexel went to Baton Rouge and upset third-seed Dunham 35-31.

In a close game throughout, St. Katharine Drexel led 20-15 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets scored the final four points of the game in the final minute for the victory.

Genise Wells led the Yellow Jackets (17-8) with 14 points. Kelsey Day had nine points for the Lady Tigers (24-7).

St. Katharine Drexel advances to the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Yellow Jackets will face second-seed St. Thomas Aquinas next Wednesday at 1:15 at Rapides Coliseum.

The Lady Falcons handled seventh-seed Episcopal 52-31 in Hammond.

STA led 14-5 after one quarter and 25-14 at halftime. It was 35-21 going to the final quarter.

Lilly Maggio led the way for the Lady Falcons (22-8) with 22 points while Jade Brumfield had 12 points. The Knights finished their season 20-12.
