Girls Basketball Playoff Report: Five matchups of area teams highlight playoff schedule Monday

The regional round of the LHSAA girls prep basketball playoffs are set for Monday evening. A total of 24 teams from the Greater New Orleans area will be in action.

Highlighting the action are five games matching area teams against one another.

In Class 5A, 15th-seed East St. John (27-7) travels to second-seed Ponchatoula at 6 p.m.

The Lady Wildcats advanced with a 52-39 win over 18th-seed Landry-Walker while the Green Wave bounced 31st-seed Parkway 66-36.

Ponchatoula (31-3) has won 16 straight games. Despite the disparity in seeds, East St. John is capable, having won eight straight games.

A pair of familiar foes square off in 4A as 13th-seeded Helen Cox (21-11) travels to face District 9-4A rival Warren Easton (21-8) at McDonogh 35 at 6:30 p.m.

Warren Easton crushed 29th-seeded Buckeye 58-18 in the bi-district round while Helen Cox fought off 20th-seed Rayne 64-59.

The Eagles downed the Cougars 60-35 at home on Jan. 12. Warren Easton is red hot, having won 13 straight games. Helen Cox has won five straight games.

In Division III, 16th-seed Newman (8-11) is at top-seed Northlake Christian (23-1) at 6 p.m. Both teams had opening round byes.

The Wolverines’ only loss was a 58-53 overtime loss to Doyle on Dec. 12. Northlake Christian has won 17 straight games.

Also in Division III, 11th-seeded Country Day (8-10) is on the road to take on sixth-seed St. Katharine Drexel (14-8) at 6:30 p.m. at McMain. Both teams enjoyed first-round byes. The Yellow Jackets have won nine straight games.

15th-seed McGehee (7-17) is on the road at second-seed St. Thomas Aquinas (21-8) at 6:30 p.m. Both teams had first-round byes. The Lady Falcons have won eight straight games.
