THIBODAUX, La. – A record-setting performance by Nicholls State University kicker Lorran Fonseca did not go unnoticed as the junior was named STATS FCS National and Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his five field-goal showing in the Colonels’ win over Abilene Christian.

A native of Hercules, California, Fonseca’s record day proved to be the difference in the 29-20 victory versus the Wildcats. After ACU scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull within 26-20, Fonseca kicked his longest field goal, a 44-yarder, with 6:08 left to make it a two-possession game. The field goal also set a new program single-game record, surpassing Adam Diel’s mark of four, set in 1996.

Fonseca was a weapon in kickoffs as well as he added four touchbacks to up his total to 20 on the season. On his four kickoffs that were returned, only one failed to reach the end zone and three of the four returns were stopped inside the 20, including one at the 3-yard line.

The weekly Southland honor is the second for Fonseca this season. The national award is the first for the Colonels since Sully Laiche earned defensive honors following last season’s win over Stephen F. Austin.

The No. 20 Colonels will have the upcoming weekend off before hitting the road to face UIW on Saturday, Oct. 28.
