Delgado opens season with 10-1 win over College of St. Joseph

Delgado opened its 2018 baseball season with a 10-1 commanding win over College of St. Joseph (Vermont) in the opening game of the 20th annual “Rags” Scheuermann Memorial Tournament at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The Dolphins hit the board early when Blake Freeman’s three run home run plated Brandon Duhon and Blake Way, who reached on a single and fielder’s choice to open the game. Hayden Fuentes reached on a fielder’s choice to score Grant Schulz, who reached on a single and advanced on a single by Lyall Ball.

In the second, Simon Prevot singled and Brandon Duhon reached on a fielder’s choice before Justin Ory’s single scored both to expand Delgado’s lead. Ory scored on a double by Blake Way, who advanced on a groundout and scored on a bases-loaded walk.

Way later singled in the fifth to score Mason Diaz, who reached on a leadoff walk. In the sixth, Brady Newman’s pinch-hit double plated Parker Evans for Delgado’s 10th and final run of the night.

College of St. Joseph’s sole run came in the fourth inning when Brian Quezada singled and later scored on groundout.

Delgado starting pitcher Mason Mayfield picked up the win with Brock Daniels pitching the final three innings in relief.

The Dolphins (1-0) return to action at 5:00 Friday, hosting Pensacola State with a second game against College of St. Joseph to immediately follow.
