It was an incredible afternoon and night of thrillers Thursday in the winner’s bracket of the Newman Invitational.

Two games were decided in overtime while another was decided on a buzzer beater.

Hahnville outlasted Karr 59-58 in overtime. The Tigers improved to 6-1 and they advance to the semifinals to take on St. Augustine at 8 p.m. tonight. The Cougars fell to 3-4.

Damon Landry connected on an improbable buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift St. Augustine to a thrilling 50-48 victory over De La Salle in the winner’s bracket of the Newman Invitational Thursday night.

Landry’s shot was disputed as De La Salle contested that it hit the basket support pole above the backboard and rim but the officials allowed the shot to count, giving the Purple Knights a huge win.

St. Aug led 19-13 after one quarter and 27-24 at halftime. The Purple Knights led 37-32 after three quarters.

The Purple Knights improved to 6-4 with the win while the Cavaliers fell to 5-2 with the loss.

Jesuit outlasted Helen Cox 74-73 in four overtimes in an epic battle to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Blue Jays will face host Newman in the semifinals tonight at 6:30 p.m. The Cougars fell to 8-3 with the loss.

The Greenies whipped John Curtis Christian 64-44. Newman took control from the start, leading 16-11 after one quarter and 32-21 at halftime. The lead grew to 50-31 after three quarters and the Greenies coasted to victory. Newman improved to 9-2 with the win while the Patriots fell to 3-6 with the loss.
