Basketball: Ellender downs St. Aug, Riverside-LW, Jesuit-Rummel highlight Tuesday slate

Always good in basketball, it has been a tough season for Ellender, at least to this point.

Perhaps the direction of the season changed for the Patriots Monday night with a solid 59-52 home victory over St. Augustine at Houma.

The Purple Knights (12-9) led 12-10 after one quarter but Ellender rallied to take a 28-24 halftime lead. The Patriots led 40-39 going to the fourth quarter before outscoring St. Aug 19-13 in the final frame for the win.

Marquie Mosley scored 17 points while Jamire Mott had 13 to lead the Patriots (6-12). Ze’ Muse led St. Augustine with 16 points while Bryson Celestine had 12 for the Purple Knights.

Ellender returns to action Friday night, hosting H.L. Bourgeois at 7 p.m. while St. Augustine returns to District 9-5A action against Archbishop Rummel Friday night.

In top games tonight, unbeaten Riverside (22-0) travels to defending state champion Landry-Walker (16-5). The Rebels defeated the Chargin’ Bucs at the Country Day tournament on Dec. 21.

In Catholic League play, Jesuit (12-3, 1-0) travels to Metairie to take on Rummel (14-6, 2-0) at 7 p.m. for the early lead in Distrtict 9-5A.

Despite losing a match out-of-state, St. Paul’s remains the top-ranked team in the latest Division I boys Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association rankings released this morning.

The Wolves (15-2) are the unanimous choice for No. 1. Baton Rouge area teams follow closely with St. Amant (17-1-1) up to second. Dutchtown (11-1-1) is third and Catholic (9-2-1) is fourth. Lafayette (11-1-7) is fifth. Northshore is sixth with Jesuit seventh and Brother Martin tenth.

In Division II, Holy Cross (9-2-1) is the unanimous choice at No. 1 with Beau Chene (12-5-4) second. East Jefferson (8-6) is third with unbeaten Riverdale (11-0) fourth and Lakeshore (3-7-2) fifth. Ben Franklin is seventh.

E.D. White Catholic (9-4-3) is the unanimous top-ranked team in Division III with Vandebilt Catholic (8-5-4) second University Lab (6-3-6) is third, Loyola Prep (7-8-5) is fourth and St. Louis Catholic (3-8-6) is fifth.

In Division IV, unbeaten Episcopal of Acadiana (12-0-1) is the unanimous top-ranked team with Northlake Christian (8-1-2) second. Episcopal (11-2-6) is third with Newman (9-2) fourth and St. Thomas Aquinas (7-5-4) fifth. Country Day is seventh.
