Barrios earns third SLC Women’s Basketball weekly award
Junior guard registers back-to-back double doubles in 2-0 week for the Colonels
FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls junior guard Cassidy Barrios is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland Players of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
This is Barrios’ third weekly honor of the 2017-18 season, having earned the award previously on Nov. 13 and Jan. 8.
Nicholls (11-12, 6-6 SLC) is currently on a three-game win streak heading into week 15. The Colonels hit the road to face Sam Houston State (4-18, 1-12 SLC) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN3 before heading to Conway to square off with Central Arkansas (16-7, 9-3 SLC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Barrios increased her Southland-best double-double total to 12 overall, leading Nicholls to a pair of convincing wins last week. She averaged 23.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocks while shooting 58 percent from the field and hitting all 15 free throws. The junior started the week with 26 points and 11 boards in an 81-60 win against Abilene Christian, making 9 of 13 from the field including three triples. In the 63-45 win against Houston Baptist, she had another double-double and blocked four shots to tie the Colonels’ single-season double-doubles record. Barrios is the only player in the Southland to rank in the top 10 for scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
